mac chrome plugin always wants a reload

I have a mac, and I use chrome. The chrome plugin ALWAYS asks for a page reload for new pages before it will let me enter a password to unlock. This is really ineffective, and recent as this didn't happen as recently as a couple of months. Is there some reason for this? How can I return to the better behavior? Demanding a page reload sometimes causes links to not work.
