Icons, icons everywhere and not a clue what's what

On the left is a Chrome "incognito" window, on the right is a Firefox window, and across the top is the Mac OS menu bar.
You can see 1Password icons in all three places.

What, please, is the difference between a, b, and c in that screen shot?

I know at least one of them is 1Password X, and I'd have thought it was the one in the Chrome "incognito" window. (I disabled the 1Password browser extension in Chrome when I finally figured out why there were TWO 1Password icons there.)

In Chrome, when I visit a login page, I click on a little dropdown that offers matching login items to choose from. If I forget and press Ctrl+\, 1Password tells me to install the extension. :/

In Firefox, when I visit a login page, I press Ctrl+\ to get 1Password to fill in the page with the credential in my matching login item.

What's what, how can I get consistent behavior across all browsers and in what I thought was called "mini," and what does the 1Password icon in the Mac OS menu bar do if it's NOT "mini"?

"Getting so much better all the time. It's getting better all the ti-i-ime."
—no one

    Hi @DavidMBrown:

What, please, is the difference between a, b, and c in that screen shot?

a is 1Password mini in the menu bar.

    b is 1Password X.

c is our traditional companion extension.

In Chrome, when I visit a login page, I click on a little dropdown that offers matching login items to choose from. If I forget and press Ctrl+\, 1Password tells me to install the extension. :/

That's correct, because Ctrl+\ is the keyboard shortcut for the companion extension, but you installed 1Password X instead. So the message you are seeing is telling you that you are trying to invoke an extension that is not installed.

To avoid confusion, I recommend choosing either the companion extension, or 1Password X, and installing that in every browser you use. As you might have noticed, the two extensions look quite different when you click on them, so you can choose the one that you prefer after you have decided which one you like the most.

    Thanks, @ag_ana.

For the record, four (counting the program itself) variants of 1Password on my computer at the same time seems—to even me, a guy who still wears his “Cmd+\ Is My Password” t-shirt—a bit excessive.

    @DavidMBrown:

Indeed, that is why we do not recommend using all of them at the same time.

    You have two options:

    1. You use 1Password X alone. 1Password X does not require the desktop app to be installed, so you can use that by itself if you prefer, without anything else.
    2. You use the 1Password desktop app with the regular browser extension. 1Password mini is technically not a separate app, but it must be kept running for 1Password to work properly if you choose this method. But even in that case, you can hide it under 1Password Preferences > General tab if it causes confusion.

So ultimately, you really need either just one or two 1Password-related icons, depending on which option you prefer. In your case, you decided to install all of them, but it doesn't look like this is what you want, so I recommend choosing your preferred method and getting rid of the additional elements which you don't want to use.
