Why two master passwords on the same machine

I have been using 1Password for quite some time on my Mac and I use Google Chrome as my browser (with the 1Password extension installed).

I recently set up a Raspberry Pi and started using Chromium, and Chromium asked if I wanted to sync my browser information? All of a sudden, 1Password appeared in Chromium and asked for the master password. I tried my normal password that I use on my Mac and it didn't work. I decided to uninstall the extension on the Pi Chromium (I don't need it), but when I returned to my Mac, the extension no longer took my master password, but my original master password that is associated with the secret key.

How can fix it so that the password on my Mac Chrome browser is the same as the password that I use when I run the 1Password app?

Thank you

  • Hey @hhyndman. It sounds like on your Mac, you might have a standalone vault. If you have a standalone vault, that vault's password is used to unlock the app as a whole. I'd suggest migrating your data fully to your 1Password account if you haven't already, and then all devices will sync with the same data and use the same one password (the one associated with your account).

    Let me know if you have questions about this. :smile:

    I have been using 1Password for so long (1Password 3, bought in 2012) that I never look at the vaults. It appears that one is "ON MY MAC" and the other is a Private vault under my FAMILY. Which vault is associated with my 1Password account? Do vaults have different passwords?

    Both vaults have data in them, so I wonder how does one migrate?

    @hhyndman

    The standalone vault is the Primary and that's the one you'll want to remove.

    1. Check to make sure all of your data is available on https://my.1password.com and ensure you have a copy of your Emergency Kit.

    2. If needed copy or move any items from your Primary vault to your membership vault (Personal/Private) that are not already present. * Please be sure you have the most up to date information in your Personal vault.

    3. Remove the Primary vault.

    Your device should now unlock with the same Master Password you use to access 1Password.com
