On what planet is credit expiry input ever yyyy/mm?

Just wondering, just one single website that solicits in this format? It's not a scarcastic question, as I'm sure there is a reason behind this, as we're currently redesigning our checkout I want to know if I missed something with 99.99% checkouts I observed being some form of mm/yy or mm/yyyy

Where are you seeing this behavior? When I look at a new credit card item (Mac) it displays as mm/yyyyy? What OS are you using?

One of my colleagues was gracious enough to point out where this is happening. I have filed a request with the development team about this behavior.
