Dropbox Location and Access

Currently my 1Password.agilekeychain file is at the root level of Dropbox. I also have a 1Password folder, but it's empty. Where should this file really be located -- in one of those two places or in /Apps/1Password? What are the implications of moving the file manually from root to another folder? Why does 1Password require full Dropbox access? If it doesn't, really, can it be reset?

  • Hi @Mrtoner,

It is up to you but our standard location is Dropbox > 1Password > 1Password.agilekeychain. If you move the data file, you need to tell 1Password on the computer to open this file, so it can update a hidden configuration file.

At the moment, It needs the full access in order to allow folks to shared their data files with other family members or co-workers without forcing them to use one data file in a specific location.

In addition, we write a hidden configuration file to the root of your Dropbox folder to inform all 1Password mobile apps where your data file is, thus the full Dropbox access. In order for all 1Password mobile apps to default to the apps folder, it requires us to update all 1Password apps at the same time but that's going to take time and a lot of careful planning to not disrupt the current operations. Imagine creating folders, moving data files and so on for millions of folks at the same time, it's just not going to work well if we don't plan it right and do it slowly.

However, that does not mean that we will never switch over to the apps folder. It's just not the right time for us to do this. We want to be conservative here and let Dropbox fix any growth pains and issues with this technology as this apps folder is fairly new. Once time passes on, we'll consider it. Note that majority of apps on your desktops uses the full Dropbox access as well, it's not that common right now to use the apps folder.
