Trouble setting up new accounts with recommended passwords

I switched to 1password a few days ago and haven't figured out the workflow for using/saving a suggested password from the chrome browser extension. I'm clicking on the suggested password, it fills the field, the password is changed on the site. Then when I try to log in again it's the wrong password. 1password is not saving the suggested password I accepted. It also does not "catch" the password after submission and ask if I want to update my existing password (Lastpass had this feature and it worked 90% of the time.)

So currently it seems the only option for avoiding error is to open the plug in, COPY a suggested password, paste it into the site fields, then go back to the extension, paste the password into the login, and save. If your suggested passwords can't be auto-saved you should remove that feature, it's super confusing. I've had to go through password reset flows about 50 times over the last few days, this is not intuitive.

As far as I see it, you are supposed to right-click the website, and in the browser context menu 1Password->save login to save the new credentials BEFORE you submit the password change dialog on the website. This way it's not required to copy the new password into the clipboard. 1Password isn't able to catch a password change on its own after you changed it on the website and isn't offering to save a changed password afterwards.

This is one of the (few) really annoying flaws of 1Password. I also lost changed passwords like you and had to recover my password on some website. We were told this is a feature (or intentional design decision) and not a flaw, but my opinion differs. Every other password manager I know that hooks into the browser is able to update the password afterwards.

  • Hi @sarahm:

That definitely isn't the experience we want you to have. When creating a password directly from the inline menu, it should look a bit like this:

I choose the suggested password from the menu, 1Password asks me to save the password, and then I can register. After filling the suggested password, does 1Password in your browser show the dialog to save the item? Let me know, and I can dig in further with you.
