Apple watch MacOS - trouble setting it up in 1password

Hi,
I'm trying set up Apple Watch to open 1Password on my Mac. I've followed the instructions listed here: https://support.1password.com/apple-watch-mac/#set-up-apple-watch and the problem is that I can't see the Apple Watch option on 1Password/Preferences/Security (as described in the instructions above) - see screenshot attached.

Any tips for next steps most appreciated.

Thanks
James

Is your watch listed in the General tab of the Security & Privacy pane of the (OS) System Preferences?

(check the checkboxes under "Use the Apple Watch to unlock app and your Mac:" line)

  • Hi @JamesRamsden:

What Mac are you using specifically? It's only supported on a Mac with a Secure Enclave:

    • iMac Pro (2017 and newer)
    • iMac (27-inch 2020 and newer)
    • MacBook Pro with Touch Bar (2016 and newer)
    • MacBook Pro (2018 and newer)
    • MacBook Air (2018 and newer)
    • Mac mini (2018 and newer)
    • Mac Pro (2019 and newer)
    • Mac Studio

    Jack, thanks. It's a iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2017)
presume because not "Pro" this model doesn't have the Apple Watch function?

Hi, can someone confirm my iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2017) cannot open 1password with Apple Watch?

  • Hi @JamesRamsden:

That is indeed correct. Since your iMac is not in that list, while you may be able to use your Apple Watch to unlock your Mac itself, it isn't possible to use your Apple Watch to unlock 1Password on your Mac.

I have a 2018 MacBook Pro with Touch Bar and there is no Apple Watch option in my 1Password Security Tab. I was able to use this function in 1Password 7

  • @TomMoccia

Are you able to unlock your Mac using your Apple Watch? If so, try these steps to see if they help:

⚠️ These steps must be completed in this exact order.

    1. Click the  Apple menu > System Settings...
    2. Open the Security & Privacy pane.
    3. Turn off "Use your Apple Watch to unlock apps and your Mac".
    4. Shut down your Mac.
    5. Restart your Apple Watch.
    6. Start up your Mac again.
    7. Turn "Use your Apple Watch to unlock apps and your Mac" back on.
    8. Open and unlock 1Password.
    9. Click 1Password > Settings..., then the Security tab.
    10. Turn on "Unlock with Apple Watch" again.

I look forward to hearing how you get on.

Nope but what did work was going from Monterey to Ventura. Then 1Password opens with Apple Watch

  • @TomMoccia – That's interesting! Thanks for the update, and let us know if you run into any trouble in the future. Glad to hear it's working as expected now. :)
