Why does 1password provide "SAVE IN 1PASSWORD" below the existing login entries for a login page?

1Password 8 is confusing me. As per every version I've used since 1Password 3, a login pop up menu shows the login credentials in 1Password for that URL. If you change the values, a separate popup asked you to save those changes in 1Password.

Now in 1Password 8, when I click in the password field, I get a popdown menu of the login credentials to choose from INCLUDING a final action of "Save in 1Password". Why? I have changed nothing. I'm just choosing an existing 1Password entry yet the initial popdown menu includes this save action. I don't know the context in which I would choose that action.

  • Hi @ddokoto ,

    Thanks for your post.

The Save in 1Password feature is useful for cases when you are typing in login details which aren't currently stored in your 1Password account as a login item. Once you've entered your username/email and password into the fields on the website, then tap this button, this will allow you to save the credentials to 1Password as a new login item.

The feature is also very useful in cases where a website has an additional field, such as a PIN or additional ID which is a constant value. Typing this value into the field, then tapping Save in 1Password will ensure that the additional field in the saved login item is saved correctly and will correctly autofill this field the next time you attempt to login to the website.

    I hope this helps. 😀

I know this. I was highlighting the difference between 1Password 8 and prior versions. If a page presents a username and password field (only) and there is an existing entry for this page in 1Password, then there is NO point of "Save in 1Password" as it duplicates the autofill entries. This makes the simple primary control flow more complicated. Before if you autofilled the entry AND changed the password before submitting it on the webpage, 1Password was smart enough to figure out you changed something relative to its database and prompted for you to save the changes.

Now it seems I have to ignore the "save in 1Password" 99% of the time. THAT'S WHAT MAKES 1Password 8 more complicated.

Hey @ddokoto I can understand what you're saying here. Just to check, what specific website are you seeing the Save option when you click to fill an existing login?

On my end, I don't get the Save option in that way. Here's a short recording of how things work for me: https://share.cleanshot.com/7aKEo1

If you can let me know more about where you're seeing the issue, and if you can share something like a screenshot of the issue, then I will be able to take a closer look. I look forward to getting those details from you soon.
