Suggestion: Show suggestions after unlocking

edited December 2022 in 1Password in the Browser

Additional background information: I have the "Show autofill menu on field focus" option turned OFF

Actual Behaviour:

When 1Password is locked and I click the icon in a text field

the main 1Password windows opens, I fill in my password, that window closes and I return to my browser. The 1Password icon now shows that it's unlocked but I have to click it again in order to see the suggestions, which feels redundant because I clicked it once already.

Desired Behaviour

  1. 1Password is locked, I click the icon in the text field
  2. The main window opens and I fill in my password
  3. I'm returned to my browser and the autofill suggestions are automatically opened

1Password Version: 8.9.10 (80910043)
Extension Version: 2.5.0
OS Version: Arch Linux
Browser:_ Firefox

Hi @wmoore, the behavior that you're encountering can happen if the field is coded a certain way. Could you share the URL to the page/form where you're seeing this? I'll test it out to see what's going on.

It's the login form on https://www.princexml.com/forum/

@wmoore Thanks for that! I tested the filling and was able to get the desired behavior: https://share.cleanshot.com/9O13j7. While I am using a Mac (and not a Linux machine), the extension should behave consistently across different browsers and operating systems. So there may be more going on from your end. Just to check, what version of Firefox do you have? Do you run into this issue when unlocking the extension on any other websites?

If the issue persists, I'd like you to send over the following so we can take a closer look at what may be going on:

Make sure that you've reproduced the issue on https://www.princexml.com/forum/ before grabbing the logs and diagnostics report. After that, please attach the logs and diagnostics to an email message addressed to support+forum@1password.com.

    With your email please include:

You should receive an automated reply from our BitBot assistant with a Support ID number. Please post that number here. Thanks!

    I'm currently on 106.0.5

    Yes I believe so.

Before I go down the diagnostics rabbit hole can I confirm that when you did your testing you had the "Show autofill menu on field focus" option turned OFF?

Also for reference this is a video of what I see: https://files.wezm.net/simplescreenrecorder-2022-12-08_16.57.03.m4v

One difference from my experience to yours is I don't have biometric unlock, so the main 1Password window comes to the foreground so that I can enter the password. Probably shouldn't matter but perhaps it's worth double checking.

@wmoore I apologize! I read that you had "Show autofill menu on field focus" off but I had missed that in my testing. With that off, the 1Password inline menu, which is what displays the suggestions, will not automatically appear. You would have to click on the 1Password icon in the login fields on your website to get to the suggestions.

Is there a reason why you have "Show autofill menu on field focus" off? Based on the desired behavior you described, it would be best to turn that on.

I turned it off because on some forms it conflicts with the built-in (non-password) autocomplete in Firefox, as well as the autocomplete some websites add to their fields. This video demonstrates both on the checkout page of https://milligram.com/: https://files.wezm.net/simplescreenrecorder-2022-12-08_17.22.27.m4v

I know that I can click the 1Password icon in the text field to hide the suggestions but that sometimes upsets the autocomplete on the website. Also when I'm filling in a form like that I usually have my hands on my keyboard to tab through the fields and fill them in. To avoid reaching for the mouse I tried pressing Escape to dismiss the suggestions, which works some times but at the same time it will often dismiss autocomplete from the website. After dealing with this for a while I ended up flipping that setting off.
