Autofill doesn't work with the form input's button, but works with extension Autofill (9to5mac.com)

This screen recording explains everything:

https://streamable.com/mqwyvh

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Open the login form in the 9to5mac.com's comment section. Example URL here; scroll down to "Conversation" and click "Log in" at the top-right of the section.
  2. In the form, click the "Email Address" form input to activate 1Password or click the 1Password button on the right.
  3. Click the available 1Password login.

What should happen: 1Password fills in my login details.

What actually happens: My login's modal closes and nothing is autofilled.

Many other smaller bugs, honestly, which is disconcerting. :( I'm sorry to say it, but I'd really hoped for a consistent experience this time. I'm trying to convince my family to switch to 1Password and on the first day, I'm already hitting weird bugs / problems 😂

  1. Sometimes, the 1Password button (in the form) disappears without any login autofilled. See the screen recording. What? That's not good!
  2. Sometimes, just the password field is filled in, before I even click anything. Also not good.
  3. Sometimes, in the login modal pop-up with my login, it has an additional button "Save in 1Password". Very confusing: it's already saved. Why? Clicking that button does nothing, as far as I can see. How do I disable / remove that?

Not sure what's happened to 1Password (first time using it in 3+ years), but I hope this is user error and I've done something wrong. Environment details below. I've installed both the browser extension and the Windows application.

1Password Version: 1Password for Windows 8.9.10 (80910043)
Extension Version: Version 2.5.1
OS Version: Windows 11 22H2 (22621.900)

  • Hey @ikjadoon,

I'm sorry for the trouble you are having on 9to5mac.com, I have done some testing and you're right. It seems the form is built in such a way it makes it difficult for 1Password to fill. I have filed an issue with our developers to see if we can improve the behaviour in a future update but in the meantime I found I was able to fill by clicking on the 1Password icon in the browser toolbar followed by 'Autofill' next to the item.

Furthermore, I apologise for troubles you have been experiencing recently. If you can provide specific examples of places you are seeing these behaviours I would be more than happy to investigate and pass it on to our development team if necessary.

    I hope this helps!

Thank you kindly, @steph.giles. I hope it can be addressed in a future update. The bug seems to be less frequent after it auto-populates / saves your email address: then 1P can fill in the password right via the form's button.

Ah, yes, that extension icon workaround, I did find it, too.

For the other issues: actually, they are all on the same URL.

1Password Modal does not pop up when selecting a form field.

    Where: on 9to5mac.com, https://arstechnica.com/civis/login

    1. Click the username field. 1P modal pops up with a matching login.
    2. Ignore the 1P modal. Instead, click the 1P logo in the same username field.
    3. Click the username field again. No 1P modal appears and does not appear even after clicking in / out of the field.
    4. You must re-click the 1P icon in the form field a 2nd time, and then the 1P modal appears with the matching login.

1Password erroneously asks me to save a login, even though it's already saved

    Where: on 9to5mac.com, https://arstechnica.com/civis/login

    1. Click the username field. 1P modal pops up with a matching login.
    2. Delete that login (e.g., if if you accidentally picked the wrong one or have hit the 9to5mac.com bug above or for any other reason).
    3. Click the username field. 1P modal pops up with a matching login, but also with an erroneous "Save in 1Password" button.
    4. If I click "Save in 1Password", it actually thinks I want to update that login (e.g., perhaps this should be worded "Update in 1Password".

This is what mine looks like:

Perhaps these are two functions of 1P I don't understand yet. I believe the 2nd one, which I've just clicked now for the first time, is meant for password updating?
