πŸ”“ Recovery Codes for Families (Beta)

πŸ‘‹ Hey everyone, following our recent release of recovery codes for Individuals, I'm happy to announce that we've expanded this feature to customers with Family accounts in Beta! Using a recovery code allows Family Organizers and Family Members to self-recover their accounts in case they forget their account password or lose their Secret Key/trusted devices. For Family accounts, this is a second recovery method in addition to the existing recovery flow by Family Organizer.

Create a Recovery Code

To create a recovery code, download the latest 1Password app (Beta) on iOS, Android, macOS, Windows, or Linux. Sign in and select your account in the Manage Accounts menu. From there, select the account you would like to set up a recovery code for. Next, go to Sign-In & Recovery and select Set up recovery code to begin creating your recovery code. Once created, make sure to store the code in a safe and accessible place outside of this account.

Use a Recovery Code

You can use your recovery code on 1Password.com to regain access to your account if you are ever locked out. To recover your account, go to the 1Password sign-in page and select Having Trouble Signing In? -> Use Recovery Code to get started.

Multiple Recovery Methods

Recovery via Family Organizer is still available, should you wish to use that recovery method. However, if a member of a Family account has a valid recovery code and recovery is initiated by a Family Organizer, they'll have the option to use their code to recover (instead of proceeding with the usual flow). This has two advantages:

  1. They won't need to wait on someone else to confirm their recovery
  2. Their recovery code will remain the same after recovery

Alternatively, if they choose to continue with the Family Organizer-led recovery, their recovery code will become invalid and they'll need to generate a new one once they are back into their account.

Notes

  • Recovering your account will result in a new password and secret key, and will require you to sign back in to 1Password on existing trusted devices
  • You'll need to have access to the email address associated with your 1Password account for account recovery
  • Your recovery code is reusable and will remain valid after it’s used

And that's it! Create and save your recovery code to never lose access to your Family account. And while you're at it, let us know what you think about this new feature πŸ™Œ

If 2FA is enabled for the account, is that required when using the recovery code?

Thanks for the question! If you've previously enabled two-factor authentication for your 1Password account, it will remain turned on when you use a recovery code.

    I hope that helps. πŸ™‚
