What's the status of Passkey export?

It's the only thing keeping me from using Passkeys now. I know everyone is saying they're working with the FIDO Alliance to make a secure way to export and import passkeys. But these things have been around for how long now, and all they've created is a vendor lock-in for the vendors that support passkeys.

The workaround would be to have more than one passkey on sites. But a lot of sites will only let you have one passkey for the site.

  • Hello @PastaShock! 👋

Thanks for the question! We believe it’s your choice where to store and use your passkeys and this is something that is being actively worked on by our team in collaboration with other members of the FIDO Alliance.

While I don't have an update to share, hopefully more news will be available soon. If you do choose to move to a different password manager then you can sign in to the website in question and create a new passkey using the other password manager to replace the current passkey.

I just want to go passkey-only for websites, and I can't do that till I can securely backup my passkeys.

Your security is only as good as the weakest link. As long as you still have a username and password for your account, passkeys are just an easier way to login.

I'm not looking to move to another password manager. I'm just looking to use passkeys.

Thanks for the reply. Your 1Password membership already includes automatic backups to your 1Password account in the cloud where your encrypted data is replicated to redundant copies on our end as part of a continuous backup process to guard against any data loss.

I know that we've discussed this before and, historically, even if an account is frozen the export function remains working so that you can take your data with you to another password manager. We believe strongly that your data is yours to take with you if you leave 1Password.
