Chrome extension for 1PW8 launchs 1PW6 app, if 1PW8 app is installed.
For years, I have been happily working with the following setup:
1Password 6 for my personal vaults [by choice, please don't argue I need to upgrade.]
1Password 7 then 8 for my work vaults.
1Password 6 connects to the Firefox plugin and syncs via Dropbox.
1Password 8 connects to the Chrome plugin and syncs via 1Password account
These have co-existed for years on the same Mac(s)*, whether launched in separate user accounts, or within the same account, with no problems between them. The 1Password 6 app was simply named "1Password 6", and did not conflict with the version 7/8 "1Password" app, both in the /Applications/ folder.
*Have used this setup on my home Mini, and my travel laptop with equal success.
Until this week, the morning of October 1 2024.
The problem started in the Work user account; when launching Chrome and the 1PW8 plugin, it suddenly launched the 1Password 6 app, which is never used in this account, and popped up with the initial setup window. Quitting 1PW6 while Chrome was open, would mean 1PW6 just opened again after a few seconds.
As a temporary workaround because I was busy, I zipped the 1Password 6 app and deleted it. Unfortunately, this was difficult to restore from as back in my personal account, when running the unzipped 1Password 6 app, I got the "1Password failed to connect to 1Password Mini" issue: https://support.1password.com/failed-to-connect/
I was able to get 1Password 6 working again by deleting the 1Password 8 app, removing the 1Password settings folders per the uninstall instructions, and reinstalling 1Password 6.8.9. https://support.1password.com/uninstall-1password/
With 1Password 8 no longer in the Applications folder, I can use 1Password 6 correctly in my personal account, and access 1Password 8 via the Chrome extension or website.
Reinstalling the 1Password 8 leads to the same problem: the Chrome extension causes 1Password 6 to launch. Note that without the 1Password 8 app installed, the Chrome extension functions correctly, and 1Password 6 can be running at the same time in the same account without issue.
Note as mentioned, there was no issue with running both apps simultaneously, or simply having them on the same computer until this week. I see there were some recent updates, this may be related? https://app-updates.agilebits.com/product_history/B5
My theory at this point is that a recent update to 1Password 8 app is causing the Chrome app to launch 1Password 6 instead of connect to 1Password 8.
1Password Version: 6.8.9
Extension Version: 8.10.46.26
OS Version: 13.6.9

Hello @sylvank! 👋
Thank you for reaching out. 1Password 6 is no longer supported and it hasn't been updated in over 6 years. More importantly, the team is not testing 1Password 6 against new updates to macOS, the browser extension, or 1Password 8 so it's possible that you'll run into novel issues that the team isn't aware of.
Using two different versions of the 1Password for Mac app can cause conflicts and it's recommended that you use just one version of 1Password on your devices in order to avoid those conflicts even if you haven't run into them in the past. Completely upgrading to 1Password 8 is the best option so that you can take advantage of the latest bug fixes and security updates: Upgrade to 1Password 8
We're currently offering discounts on 1Password memberships to users who have been using our old licensed version of 1Password. It you're interested then send in an email to
