Sync between Safari extension and 1Password is slow
I have been using 1P for ten years now. Syncing is incredibly slow. On the same machine, it takes forever between the Safari extension and the primary copy of 1P. Trying to get support is always a chore. Secret keys, different logons. Once in, you can't get to support. It won't let me only use my shared vault and once I end up with logins in the other vault, it is impossible to move them to the shared vault. The product gets increasingly hard to use.

Hello @howardn! 👋
I'm sorry that you're running into trouble with 1Password, the team and I are here to help. I'll reply below:
It won't let me only use my shared vault and once I end up with logins in the other vault, it is impossible to move them to the shared vault.
You can move items from one vault to the other by using the desktop app to drag and drop items from one vault to the other: Move or copy items
Trying to get support is always a chore.
You can always reach our support team by sending an email to

I'm sorry that you're not seeing the same thing in 1Password for Safari and other versions of 1Password. So that I can better understand the situation:
- Does the issue occur when creating new items or editing existing items using 1Password for Safari?
- By "primary copy of 1P" are you referring to the desktop app on the same Mac or to the 1Password.com web app?
- If you're referring to the desktop app then, the next time that you don't see a change made using 1Password for Safari in the desktop app, can you check to see if you see that change when you log in to your 1Password account on 1Password.com (in the browser, not the app)? This will tell me more about where the issue is occuring.

Thanks for the reply. I moved the items to my shared vault using the desktop app. It would be nice if there were an ability not to have the other vault. It causes me nothing but grief. Support does work using email, but it isn't easy to get support, FAQ, etc., using the app/website. My syncing issues exist in several circumstances. I use 1P Family, and it takes too much time and effort to get an updated or new login from one copy of 1P to another. I will document it next time. This last time, I was using the 1P Mac app and the Sarai extension on the same machine, and they were not in sync.

Thank you for your reply. I appreciate the details. If you need further assistance via email, please don't hesitate to contact

. We can point you to the correct guides, exchange screenshots, and list all the necessary steps.May I confirm if you are referring to not having your Private vault? If so, while you cannot delete the Private vault, you can change where a new Login item saves. Here's how for the 1Password desktop app:
- Open and unlock the 1Password desktop app.
- Click the account name on the top left and select Settings.
- In the General section under Default Vault, change Save new items in to your preferred vault.
How to change where new items get saved in 1Password for Safari:
- Open Safari.
- Right-click the 1Password icon in Safari's toolbar and select Settings.
- In the Autofill & save section, change New items get saved in to your preferred vault.
To confirm, when you say not in sync, is there an "Offline indicator" (Cloud icon with a line through it) beside the search field in the 1Password desktop app or the 1Password browser extension? Here's a screenshot for reference:
I look forward to your reply.

Your suggestion doesn't work. It works sometimes, but not all of the time, as I end up with some passwords in Private. Just let us disable it!!!! You also haven't fixed the preference that allows the password to display. I still have to click Reveal.

I'm sorry that you're still running into issues. When you end up with a login in your Private vault, on what device did you create that login? Evon's suggestions include steps for both the desktop app and 1Password for Safari, is it possible that you're using an app on your mobile device to save an item when it ends up in your Private vault?
You also haven't fixed the preference that allows the password to display. I still have to click Reveal.
Can you clarify this issue a little further? Where are you trying to reveal the password? In the desktop app? In the browser extension? On a website itself?
Just let us disable it!
Thank you for the feedback, I've shared your request with the team. 🙂

For the private vault issue, I have checked all devices. Shouldn't that preference sync? I don't know which device is doing it because I don't think to check every time a password is stored. Every month or so, I move the 3-5 passwords over to shared. For me, it has been that way for many years.
For reveal: It happens in the main app after you update a password and always in the extension.

Thanks for the reply. The settings won't sync across your devices, this is done because you might wish to have different vaults preferred on different devices.
If you can identify which device you're using when a login is saved to your Private vault then we can investigate to make sure that the settings are working properly on that device.
For reveal: It happens in the main app after you update a password and always in the extension.
Can you provide with me steps that I can follow to reproduce the issue on my end? We do have a known issue where if you select "Always show passwords and full credit card numbers" in the desktop app that the passwords will still be concealed in the desktop app while editing an item, is that what you're referring to? If it isn't then let me know.
The browser extension doesn't currently have a feature to show passwords without first having to reveal them and I'll let the team know that this is something that you'd like to see. 🙂

Th problem is the extension does not honor Reveal. I requested this feature well over a year ago and still think it would be nice. I think that having a setting to display passwords and then not displaying them is not an ideal situation!
I will check all devices for the settings on the vault, but for those of us that do not want the vault it would be nice if you allow us to block it. I am writing to you on a new replacement Mac and it was not set to Private. Maybe you need an install utility to walk us through the main settings when we install??
