Websites requiring passwords in spite of pass keys

I am confused by pass keys. For one of my financial accounts, I have stored the passwords in 1Password. I have also stored a pass key there as well. When I go to the account, my face get scanned and 1Password populates both the passwords, and perhaps passes along the pass key. At least that’s what it seems like it’s doing. I use my face to unlock 1Password. Can you help me understand what’s going on? Why do I still need a password if I’m using a pass key on my financialaccount?

  • Hello @MJOConnell77! 👋

Thank you for reaching out. Passkeys are a modern alternative to passwords – they enable people to log in to their online accounts without having to enter a password. While websites may choose to implement passkeys in slightly different ways, you generally shouldn't be asked for a password and a passkey at the same time.

So that I can better understand the situation can you tell me the following:

    1. Which website are you signing into?
    2. Are you signing into the website using a Mac or Windows PC? Or an iPhone or Android phone?
    3. Which browser are you using?

I look forward to hearing from you.

    Hi,

I’m actually using an app for DCU.org. Here are screenshots for my experience.

    1) this is what I see when I open the app

    2) this is what I see after I click sign in with Face ID

So I’m not sure that there’s a pass key involved, but if it wants me to sign in with my Face ID, why is it populating my password?

I can’t tell if it’s 1Password populating the password or some other mechanism. I do have the password stored in 1Password.
