[Feature Request] Adding the current website to a login entry is too complicated

A common user flow I do is:

  1. Create a new login on the 1password phone app without a website (often for an app that I don't yet know the website URL).
  2. At a later date I'm on my computer and I need to log into the website for that login entry, but I have to search 1Password to find the entry since it has no website entered.
  3. At this point in time, I want to add the website URL to my 1Password login entry.

This is how you add the website today with the browser extension

  1. You click the 3 dots -> "Edit".
  2. In the new tab you can now edit the login entry.
  3. But, what is the URL again? You have to go back to the original tab and copy the URL.
  4. Then switch back to the 1Password tab to paste the URL in there.
  5. Save the new entry.
  6. Go back to your original tab.

I'm really not a fan of how many steps this common user flow takes. It also introduces the possibility of mispelling the website URL if you're not copy-pasting it in, which is a security issue.

How I wish I could do it

I think there's multiple ways to solve this.

Solution 1

  1. You click the 3 dots -> "Add this website"
  2. 1Password automatically grabs the domain from the currently open website and adds it the the current login entry.

That's all, just one button, no complications with needing to copy-paste the website URL.

Solution 2

  1. Because the login entry does not have a website entered, it will show an "Add this website" button in place of where the website would appear.
  2. When you click the button, 1Password automatically grabs the domain from the currently open website and adds it the the current login entry.

Mockup

I did a basic mockup of what those 2 solutions could look like:

Mockup illustrating two proposed solutions to simplify adding a website URL to a 1Password login entry. Solution 1 shows adding a menu button labeled 'Add this website' in the dropdown menu. Solution 2 shows a button labeled 'Add this website' in place of the missing website URL field within the login entry interface.

Comments

  • @chris__hayes, thank you for writing in. I appreciate the information you shared about your experience with 1Password in the browser. While I can't make any promises, I've passed your feedback to our product team for further consideration.

Alternatively, if you have the 1Password desktop app installed and integrated with the 1Password extension, you could edit the Login item in the 1Password desktop app instead.

I hope that helps. Let me know if you have any questions.
