New Computer migrate only 1Pass4? or 1Pass3 also?
I am setting up a new Macbook Pro from scratch rather than use migration assistant. I downloaded Dropbox first and then 1 Password4. All seemed well until I realized that the passwords and sync status was from several months ago. I recall being told NOT to delete 1Password3 from my old mac after downloading 1Password 4 as they would need to share info. Is this the case when moving to a new computer as well?
I was not initially able to access the old computer, but since I have, it seems to have overridden the older version with the most recent sync simply by powering on the old computer. I backed up immediately, but am concerned this will happen again after I've sold the old computer.

Hi, @jeremymaxwell.
It looks like you may have a few issues I can help you resolve. Let's start with the easiest first. :)
If all your required 1Password data is available in 1Password 4 on your new Mac then you're can certainly disable any Dropbox syncing between it and 1Password 3 on your old Mac. Any sharing/syncing between the two is optional and whoever told you "they would need to share info" may have only meant temporarily just to copy/sync your data from 1P3 to 1P4.
Now it gets trickier (for me) …
The key issue is making sure you do still have access to all your 1Password data, regardless of where it currently is. I'm not sure I understand this:
All seemed well until I realized that the passwords and sync status was from several months ago.
Are those passwords in 1P4 on your new Mac?
I was not initially able to access the old computer, but since I have, it seems to have overridden the older version with the most recent sync simply by powering on the old computer.
Which data was overridden where? It sounds like newer data from 1P4 overwrote older data in 1P3. But above it sounds like older data "from several months ago" was in 1P4.
If Dropbox syncing is configured between 1P3 (old Mac) and 1P4 (new Mac) then it's expected that the data be the same on both.
I backed up immediately, but am concerned this will happen again after I've sold the old computer.
Was that a 1P3 backup on your old Mac?
What puzzles me most is if you're selling your old Mac then why you're not fully and securely removing all traces of 1Password 3 and your data from it first, which also removes any concern that "this will happen again".
Let's backtrack a bit and clarify what you'd really like to accomplish …
Is your goal to migrate from 1Password 3 on your old Mac to 1Password 4 on your new Mac? I think you're already most of the way there.
Do you currently have a known good "master" copy of your 1Password data you want to use? Easiest if it's already in 1P4 on your new Mac but if you're not sure then I can help you find and recover whatever you need.
Can you "pull the plug" on your old Mac after 1P3 and any data on it are no longer needed?
Once everything is in 1P4 on your new Mac there is no reason to have dependency on 1P3 and your old Mac that's intended to be sold. Or am I missing something?
Thanks in advance for additional information that helps us get this sorted out and working the way you want it to.

HI, just reading threads in preparation for getting a new computer. I am using 1Pass 3.8 I got the upgrade for version 4 and realized it wouldn't work on the current Mac OS. No problem… I've been using version three and look forward to a new Mac with Mavericks in about a week. I have a dropbox account so my info should be synced. I will manually transfer my data. I think it should be easy, but if you have a few tops that would be great. I'm going through all my apps to make sure I am good to go once I get my new machine.

Hi, @tdevries!
Fortunate you, getting a new computer. :)
I have a dropbox account so my info should be synced.
Is the 1Password keychain that's currently syncing with 1Password 3 in the preferred Dropbox/1Password/1Password.agilekeychain location? Are any other systems/devices syncing with it?
I will manually transfer my data.
Are you intending to use 1Password 3 at all on your new Mac and/or copy its data from your old to new Mac?
It can be easier going straight to 1P4 and leaving 1P3 and/or its data behind. After Dropbox is configured on your new Mac and syncs the 1Password keychain then 1P4 should have no trouble detecting it, like in these initial setup steps:
Setting Up 1Password 4 for Mac
It's most convenient when 1P4 can find and use the correct data (if any) during first-time setup. If there's any trouble during setup it can be fixed later.
Before upgrading you might like to browse through some of the 1P4 documentation, if you haven't already, starting with:
Welcome to 1Password 4 for Mac
I hope that helps. If you have more upgrade-related questions, or any others, please do ask. :)

Hi, thanks so much for the response.
Yes, my keychain is in the "right place", so that's sorted. I won't use 1Pass3 at all, I try to use current versions. So, in theory, if I download the 1pass4 and use my current license, that will be good to go…? I appreciate your input and thanks for the quick response! yes, a new computer, should be great….

You're most welcome, @tdevries.
Your upgrade strategy sounds good. Here's a quick review:
Run File > Backup Data File in 1Password 3 on your old Mac to save a final pre-upgrade backup there.
On your new Mac:
- Install and configure Dropbox, letting it finish syncing so your 1Password keychain is ready and waiting.
- Install 1Password 4, go through the initial setup where it should automatically find and use your 1Password keychain in Dropbox to create the Primary vault, then add your 1Password 4 for Mac license.
And you're all set! We're here to assist if you need it, or just want to tell us how much you're enjoying your new Mac and 1Password 4. :)

Hi again! Thanks for the input. I'll certainly put in a good word for 1Pass. I've gone through all my apps and sorted installers, passwords, etc. etc. 1Pass is a great way to organize that. I've been trying to keep all that info in separate places, but this is the first till I've felt really prepared and secure with all the information in one place, ready to be used.
