1Password Updater interrupted my full-screen movie!
I was happily watching a movie full screen on my iMac, when all of a sudden a dialog box popped up in the middle of the screen.
It was too far away for me to read, and then it disappeared — but it had the side-effect of making both the Mac OS X dock AND menu bar appear permanently in the foreground. The movie continued to play full-screen, only behind the dock and menu bar. So I had to get up from my sofa, walk all the way to my iMac, and wiggle the mouse to try and make them disappear.
Then I noticed that the app which had focus (shown in bold on the left hand side of the menu bar) was not the movie player, but something called 1Password Updater. So I'm pretty sure that was the culprit.
Anyway, wiggling the mouse did NOT make the dock or menu bar disappear; I had to click on the movie itself which was still playing full screen, but this only made the dock disappear, not the menu bar. At this point I couldn't be bothered to stop the movie and fix the problem (there were only like, 10 minutes left), so I left it playing — but this meant I watched the end of the movie with a Mac OS X menu bar across the top of the screen saying "1Password Updater". When the movie finished and I exited full screen, there was a dialog box behind which said "A new version of 1Password is available!"
Now, excuse me for being picky, but this should NOT happen. If a movie is being watched full-screen, it should not be interrupted either by the OS or any application.
To be clear though: I do like apps to automatically check for updates, so turning off automatic updates is not an ideal workaround. And I do (in general) like apps to ask me before installing an update.
But. Not. While. I'm. Watching. A. Movie.
In fact, I think updaters that pop up at completely random times, even when you're not using the app that wants to update, are evil (Adobe Flash I'm looking at you!). I'd much prefer to be accosted only next time I use the app in question.
So, in terms of making the 1Password Updater a bit less ill-mannered, is this something that can be looked at?

Hi @semblance,
I'm so sorry to hear that 1Password interrupted your movie - you're right, that's not great. It is a known issue that our developers are working on improving, but I've added an extra vote to the issue, just for you. :)

You're welcome, @semblance, on @Megan's behalf. I can't think of anyone who wouldn't appreciate a less intrusive 1Password Updater. :)

On further reflection: even if the updater didn't interrupt apps running full-screen, having it pop up at random times is still far from ideal.
Murphy's law states that it will always pop up when my wife is using the computer, and I have trained her to ignore all such pop-ups because she cannot distinguish between genuine pop-ups, and dangerous ones such as web sites trying to install something. So when it happens, the net effect is:
- She gets interrupted by inscrutable gobbledegook
- I don't get to see the update request
I wish there was some way I could label myself as the nominated system administrator for my computer, so that random application updaters could at least be configured to only accost me.
By the way, I have exactly the same problem with Apple's own OS X updater, so you're not alone! :(
