Changing passwords and 1P recovery

I am well overdue to change my 1Password master password but want to make sure I can get access in case I forget my new one. 1P does backups of my database. If I were to forget my new password, can I restore from a backup and use my old password for recovery?

    Hi @kbreit,

In general, we don't recommend changing your Master Password too often. Once you have a nice, strong Master Password, memorize it, and don't change it. :) Our article Towards Better Master Passwords has some great tips on how to create strong passwords that are easy to remember (and type)!

To answer your question though, a backup will require the Master Password that was in place at the time it was created. So let's say you had a backup from Friday, and you changed your Master Password Sunday. You restore to Friday's backup. You'll use Friday's Master Password.

As I mentioned before though, it really is best to be sure that your Master Password is a memorable one so that you don't have to use this option. If you are concerned about forgetting it, writing it down in a secure location (such as a locked drawer) might be a good solution as well. :)

Please let me know if you have any further questions, I'd be happy to help!
