1Password Mac + Dropbox, recurring sync errors

There are multiple threads here reporting errors similar to what I am seeing; it is unclear if they are resolved, or apply to different versions.

I have 1P on my work and home machines, both running Mavericks v10.9.2 and both running v4.1.2. Both sync to dropbox v2.6.5. Both use the same App Store account. I also have 1P on my iPhone.

I changed a password at work yesterday, saving it to 1P. I used 1P several times during the day to log in with the new password so am confident it was saved.

When I got home, I found the password had not synced, either to my Mac or iPhone. I am working from home today. Unfortunately, it was the password for our VPN, so I cannot get access to my machine at work.

Both point to the 1Password.agilekeychain in the same subfolder (not top level) of the Dropbox folder. I can see that in the data/default folder via dropbox on the web a number of items were updated after I got home from work yesterday.

In the last event, I think I was not seeing stuff from home on my work machine; I don't recall what steps were required to resolve that, but it was working, at least in that direction. I suspect the issue is with the work computer, since I am able to make changes at home that I see on my iPhone.

Please advise.

Thanks,

Tom Harrison

  • Hi Tom,

    Please try this for me:

    1) Add a uniquely named secure note on each computer

    2) Login to 1PasswordAnywhere and see if the note appears: http://learn.agilebits.com/1Password4/iOS/Tutorials/ios-1pa.html

This will tell us which computer isn't working properly. The one who's note does not appear in 1PasswordAnywhere is the culprit. Then we can troubleshoot from there.

    Thanks!

Thanks @bwoodruff -- It appears the work computer is at fault. Note from Home showed up 1PasswordAnywhere (and iPhone) but not work. Note from work is only visible at work. I took one other step: added a file to dropbox from work and one from home -- both synced to the other side.

  • Great. Please open the 1Password Preferences on the work computer, select the sync tab, and re-enable Dropbox sync.

Please let me know how that turns out.

All is well. Re-syncing my work computer's with dropbox took me from 2Password to 1Password again (with a few conflicts to work out).

The engineer in me would love to know root cause -- is or was there a known issue? If so is it resolved?

But the customer in me is just a happy camper knowing that I typically have incredibly obtuse 20 character passwords, each one different for each service and none (except my master) is one I know or have written down and that I change periodically. Many others will have their customer information stolen by various means involving password cracking.

Now, as long as I don't click on any of the links in the multiple emails in my spam folder, all of which suggest that my security needs to be verified by a simple click taking me to CityBank (gee, thought it was CitiBank!) I should be relatively safe, at least until the next cyber war breaks out. La, la, la!

    Hi Tom,

On behalf of Ben, thanks so much for letting us know that you're all sorted out!

If you're curious about the why behind this sync mystery, I'd suggest reading our post here: 1Password 4.1 Lost Sync Permissions after a System Restart. I'm guessing this little guy was the culprit in your case.

Good luck avoiding those spammy links, and here's to hoping that the next cyber war is far far away :)
