How to start over with 1Password?

My iMac has a Primary vault that contains passwords for sensitive sites like the bank, credit cards, and the like. It has a long, very strong password. Ordinary passwords are kept in a secondary vault with a shorter (though still strong) password.

In setting up synching with a MacBook Pro via Dropbox, the vaults got reversed. The sensitive vault is always open when the vault with the shorter password is open.

I want to clean out the 1Password installation on the MacBook and start over. I have been to http://learn.agilebits.com/1Password4/Mac/en/KB/start-over.html and it doesn't work for me. When 1Password is opened after renaming the key files, it evidently looks at Dropbox and happily announces that it has found my data and, without giving me the opportunity to say "No", installs the data from both 1Password vaults as Primary.

Would removing 1Password from the MacBook and reinstalling clear this up? Is there a better way?

    Hi @JV919,

I'm sorry your 1Password data isn't in the vaults that you want it to be in right now.

Which version of 1Password are you running? Does your Primary vault currently contain the "ordinary" data and the secondary vault contains the "sensitive" data you want in the Primary? In other words, do you just want to swap data between the Primary and secondary?

How is 1Password syncing currently configured for each vault? For example, is each configured with a different Agile Keychain in Dropbox?

Once we know where your 1Password data currently is we can better help you with reconfiguration so it's where it belongs. Or you can give this a try:

If you do have all of your 1Password vaults syncing with separate keychains in Dropbox then after you've gone through the starting over guide make sure to select the right one for your Primary vault during the setup. If you see this screen:

… try selecting click here ▾ to select a different option. to confirm it's correct. When there are multiple keychains in Dropbox, 1Password may automatically pick the incorrect one and you have to manually choose the right one. If the 1Password setup doesn't find your data for some reason then you can do it manually with steps from this guide:

Helping 1Password find existing data in Dropbox

After you've got your Primary vault set up (with your "sensitive" data) and syncing with the correct keychain in Dropbox, you can create a new secondary vault and configure Dropbox syncing for it with the existing keychain containing your "ordinary" data (instead of creating a new one).

Before doing all that run File > Backup to manually create a backup of your existing 1Password database so you'll have that to restore from if necessary. But since you've been through the starting over steps before you might already have other more complete backups available to restore from so don't remove or overwrite those.

Please let us know have questions about any of that or run into any issues. Thanks!
