Can't enter Latin1 / diacritic in Master Password field on Mac

Hello - searching the forums, this is an issue that has been seen before and marked as closed.

I'm on OS X 10.9.2 with a British keyboard. 1Password Version 4.2.2 (422001)

In an effort to make for a stronger Master Password, I've incorporated the letter ë

On iOS, this is easy to enter - hold down the letter e and select the correct option from the list of all e+diacritics

However, on Mac, neither of the two keyboard routes work. Not

  • alt+u & e

  • hold the e to see all diacritic versions

With the alt+u & e method, a warning beep is issued

With hold e key, no diacritic selector is displayed - multiple char e are entered

If I type the password into a text editor and then Copy/Paste into 1Password, that works fine, so it is not the password itself, just the route to enter it.

True in both the app and the browser plugin.

Post #2 in this thread (on a different forum) may be helpful.

Thanks Stephen - it is helpful, but not really a good enough answer. If Agilebits are going to make that design decision, then they should at least make it so that it is not possible to enter anything other than 7-bit US ASCII when creating a Master Password.

I'm also not sure how it is possible to type ü on a German keyboard and be different to a ü typed on a US keyboard? I can understand how someone may think they're typing ü and get something different because they've used an unfamiliar keyboard, but surely U+00FC is always U+00FC?

FYI, single key modifiers seem to be OK in the Master Password field. So if you're on Mac and want to incorporate ç å ø then you're OK.

    Hi Graham,

Thanks so much for the feedback! There is an issue filed in our tracker to clarify this, and I've added your thoughts there. We'll do our best to make it more clear to users that only ASCII characters should be used in their Master Passwords.
