I've been laid off and had to abandon the work computer, advice?

Hello,
I was wondering if there's a best practices for leaving a computer behind. I was recently laid off and do not have access to that computer. I changed my laptop master password for 1Password, but when I logged on to my other computer, I noticed that it had not changed it's master password. Nobody in my old office has my password, but I wonder if there's a proper process to do in these instances?

Change Dropbox password as well if you use that.

    Hi @duncancreamer,

I'm truly sorry to hear about your recent layoff and wish you the very best for finding a great new opportunity.

That's a good question about best practices after abandoning the work computer you can no longer access. In general, whatever you stored on it is now in someone else's control who hopefully respects and handles it responsibly. Is there's any sensitive personal information outside of 1Password that you're concerned about anyone else seeing?

As far as 1Password goes, your data file is encrypted with an exceedingly secure encryption algorithm called AES. Even if someone were to acquire a copy of your 1Password data file, it would be extremely difficult (approaching impossible in a human lifetime) for them to actually gain access to your passwords without your Master Password. If you're interested, you can see the thoughts behind our data format's design here:

Also, you can check out our blog for many more articles that go into the nitty gritty math behind what makes 1Password so secure:

    Now about this:

I changed my laptop master password for 1Password, but when I logged on to my other computer, I noticed that it had not changed it's master password.

Which other computer is that one?

Using the same Master Password for 1Password on all your systems/devices is recommended. Changing it on one of them can, and is intended to, cause the change to sync to the others. However, there is currently a bug where the Master Password doesn't sync between Macs. Until our developers squash this bug, if you do change your Master Password please confirm that it has updated on all computers and devices, and change it manually if it has not. That way you won't be left wondering where it actually did and didn't get updated.

Obviously you can't change it on your work computer, but:

Nobody in my old office has my password, but I wonder if there's a proper process to do in these instances?

As long as only you have the Master Password (whichever one it is) for all your 1Password data then no one else will be able to unlock and access any of it.
