Why Can't I upgrade from 1Password V3 to 1Password4?
I bought 1Password for my Mac and iPad a couple months ago. Now, there is a "new" 1Password, but I can't automatically update from version 3 to version 4. WHY?
If the application is supposed to get automatic upgrades, why do I need to buy the latest release? Will I have to purchase 1Password again once it reaches Version 5?
And to top it all off, would I have to buy these "new" versions on my iOS devices as well? And I have to purchase separate apps for my iphone and ipad.
Considering moving to another company/program rather than purchasing 1Password over and over again...

How did you get the 1Password 3 apps?
We published 1Password 4 for iOS back in 2012 and 1Password 4 for Mac in 2013. We didn't have any paid upgrade since then.

Almost all programs charge for upgrades to newer full version (3 to 4, 4 to 5, etc). But point updates, 4.1 to 4.2 etc are free on most programs, including 1PW.
The iOS versions are separate. But there is now (and has been for a long time) no difference between iPhone and iPad programs, one purchase covers both.

One thing specific about 1Password 3 for the Mac is that its minimum software OS requirements are quite different from 1Password 4. Thus, it would be illogical for its auto-updating mechanism to suggest upgrading to 1Password 4 — lots of customers wouldn't notice the requirements or the upgrade price and would upgrade the software and then get "stuck" with something they cannot use or don't want to pay to upgrade.
Depending on exactly how long ago you bought 1Password for your iPad it may or may not be the most current version. Since you said "a couple months ago" then you should be okay but then again, you wouldn't have been able to buy 1Password 3 that recently since as Roustem said… 1Password 4 for Mac has been the only version sold for several months now. So it comes down to "couple" versus "several" months. 1Password 3 for Mac purchases for even longer are eligible for free 1Password 4 for Mac so you may want to look for the specifics of your two purchases and get in touch with AgileBits by email to discuss your purchases and upgrade eligibility. The forums aren't the best "forum" for working out purchase specifics as each user's situation may be different.
