What does the gear icon in the password box (in the application 1Password4) do?

I don't understand what this icon is, or what it does. When I am in the edit and the gear icon in the password box is clicked, it changes the password in the box, but appears not to apply it to the web site. What is this icon for? I'm afraid to click it for fear that it will mess up the password stored there. But, it must have some purpose.

The icon to which you refer starts the built-in password generator which helps you to create strong passwords. In order to use it you will be in edit mode (editing the relevant login) so you won't change that login item unless you save the changes after using the password generator. (In other words, if you click Cancel after using the generator nothing will change in the login.)
You can also use the generator from 1P mini when you're on a site creating a new login, and that's very useful.
