Password records removed from folders [Moved to private email]

When changing a password the password record is now removed from its host folder making it harder to find in future - I guess I'll eventually end up with one long alphabetical list of about 300. I would be good to revert to the previous system whereby passwords weren't refiled upon a change.

  • Hi @JimH,

I'm not able to reproduce this issue here.

Just to be clear, you edit an item that is stored in a folder, save it, and the item is removed from its folder?

Could you also let me know what version of 1Password you are using?

That's right. I'm using 1P 4.4 from the Apple Store.

  • Hi @JimH,

I am sorry to hear about the trouble with 1Password! Lets figure out whats going on.

Lets try something - add a new test login item and save it in a folder. Change the password and save it. Does this one also get removed from the folder for you?

No, it stayed in its folder.

    Hi @JimH,

That's a good sign! Now, I'd like you to duplicate the entry that was giving you trouble, and try to update the password in the new entry. Does it stay properly in its folder?

It's not a single entry which is the problem. All changes to passwords result in the login 'page' being removed from their folders.

    Thanks for the followup, @JimH.

Could you describe the steps you're using to change a password that's causing the item to be removed from its folder? Did you change it differently for the item that @Meek asked you to create and test with when it remained in the folder? And like @Megan suggested, can you try duplicating an item in a folder, then use your regular procedure to change its password and let us know if that stays in or is removed from the folder? You mentioned:

All changes to passwords result in the login 'page' being removed from their folders.

Except for at least with the test you did for @Meek, so it could be helpful to determine why that differed.

A couple things you could do until we've isolated what's causing your problem and are able to fix it:

    • Add tags to items in folders as a way to keep track of them in case they do get removed from folders after password updates.
    • Create new folders, move items from existing folders into those, and see if they stay there after password updates.

I recently updated passwords for several items in different folders and they were all still in them afterwards. It's still puzzling why yours aren't staying put.

To change a password, I pin the site log-in info onto the screen using the 1P browser icon and then

    • copy and paste my current password into the website
    • edit the 1P browser icon password and then save it
    • copy and paste the new password into the website from the 1P icon info
    • do the same to confirm the new password
    • press accept/continue etc
    • if 1P offers to update the record I accept or otherwise I update the record manually
    • log out

The problem happens irrespective of how I go about changing a password.

The procedure suggested by @Meek involved changing a dummy password record ie one with no website data which is unlike the actual procedure used for real on a website.

I tried duplicating a password record and using the duplicate to change a password. This worked fine first time around but when I changed the password again it no longer stayed in its folder.

Putting a log-in record into a new folder made no difference.

    Hi @JimH,

I've spoken with a developer and we think we have an idea of what's going on here. We're going to need a bit more information to get to the bottom of this:

    • Could you tell me the precise version number of both 1Password and your operating system for all computers and devices currently running 1Password?
    • What are you using to keep your data in sync?

I'd also like to take a closer look at your system here. Could you please send us a Diagnostics Report?

    http://learn2.agilebits.com/1Password4/diagnostic-report.html

Then attach the entire file to an email to us: support+forum@ agilebits .com

Please do not post your Diagnostics Report in the forums, but please do include a link to this thread in your email, along with your forum handle so that we can "connect the dots" when we see your Diagnostics Report in our inbox.

A short note here once you've sent the Report in will help us to keep an eye out for it. :)

Once we see the report we should be able to better assist you. Thanks in advance!

    That's encouraging. Version numbers are:

    • iMac OSX 10.9.2 (13C1021)
    • iPhone and iPad IOS 7.1.1(11D201).
    • MAS 1P on iMac 4.4 (440001)
    • On iTunes apps I can see '1Password - Password Manager and Se......19.1 MB Remove' and '1 Password Pro 15.8 MB Install' and 1Password for iPhone 13.7MB Install
    • on both iPhone and iPad under Trouble Shooting/Log Settings/Enable Logs I can see Agile Keychain (1P3) and Cloud Keychain (1P4). I don't if any of these are active.
    • Additionally, and unfortunately, my previous 1P3 bought from the Agile Bits store continues doing backups in addition to the MAS version. I posted this problem on 5th May and have copied it below.
    • I sync with WiFi usually once every few weeks but recently a few times a week thanks to Heartbleed.

I'll email the diagnostics report shortly.

COPY OF POST MADE ON 5TH MAY
I am using MAS 1P 4.4 (440001) with OS 10.9.2. Previously I was using 1P3 from the AgileBits Store.

My back ups are saved in a containers folder, which I believe is correct for MAS 1P 4.4, but I also have five folders within Application Support/1Password as follows:

    1Password.agilekeychain Agent Backups Diagnostics Extensions

Having checked, I can see backups are being saved in both a Containers folder and in the sub-folder under Application Support/1Password.

Should and can I delete the folder Application Support/1Password and its five sub folders?

Do I need to do anything to stop backups being made in the Application Support/1Password/backups folder?

PS: I also sync to a folder on my iMac which I set up via 1P/Preferences/Sync

  • Hi @JimH,

Many of our developers are at the NSNorth conference right now, including Rad, who wants to look at your email. He'll follow up to you in the email as soon as possible.

In the meantime, to simplify the workflow, I'm going to close this thread, so that we can keep it going through the emails. I will reply to you there to let you know this as well.

    Thanks!
