Migrating from MAS to web store version

This is a bit complex, but I need to sort it all out before migrating from the MAS version to the web store version. I've been using iCloud sync with my MAS version of 1Password since iCloud sync was available...that's quite awhile now. I'm also using iCloud sync with my iOS versions of 1Password.

This said, if I go to Dropbox I still see a 1Password folder there and the file "1password.agilekeychain" in this folder. The file is dated May 16, 2014...but there has been NO preference connection between 1Password and Dropbox for a long time. So why is the "1password.agilekeychain" file being updated so recently when I use iCloud to sync with everything?

I currently use the MAS version, but am about to migrate back to the AgileBits web store version and I want to make sure I don't lose any data in this move. I was going to just change my 1Password synching from iCloud to Dropbox on both the Mac and my iOS devices and then migrate to the web store version, but I'm now worried whatever data is in the existing Dropbox file will overwrite the current iCloud keychain data. I would just delete the Dropbox file, but I'm leery of doing that, also. I just made about 120 password changes on Watchtower's recommendation, so I don't want to do all that again.

It's clear how to migrate to the web store version using the tutorial at: http://learn2.agilebits.com/1Password4/Mac/en/KB/mas-web.html but I'd rather do it the easy way, by switching to Dropbox sync first, then migrate back and let 1Password 4 just pickup the Dropbox sync data and not have to go through the other more difficult way of migrating (2nd part of the tutorial).

Thanks for any help.

I've removed the 1Password folder and old keychain (saved to desktop) and the world didn't end, nor did the folder/file re-recreate automatically, so I will assume it was simply the act of a gremlin :-)

In any event, I'll proceed with changing the sync type in the MAS version preferences to Dropbox, then move the iOS app to that method as well. Then after I'm sure all is synching via Dropbox I'll probably migrate the Mac version to the web store version. In any event, I'll consider this post closed, unless someone just wants to comment on it.

I'm not, now...but it's too complicated to bore you with, other than the reasons involved the obvious earlier updates with the web store version vs. MAS version and the other was a licensing issue. Lots of Macs, two users, and the MAS version doesn't come in a family pack flavor and the Agile store version does. But in the long run, the benefits of the iCloud version are better. More security, we use only iOS devices, etc.

No offense, Andrew, but I already know these things and my question was never about a "family" Apple ID. I've been using 1P since it first came out and I'm a retired geek. Thanks for your assistance, though :-)

I'm sorry, but I do think you are incorrect (if I read the licensing correctly). Think of my wife's iMac as an iMac that belongs down the road to someone else...it is NOT mine, it IS hers. She has her own Apple ID and I have mine. So if I use her computer and go to the MAS and download 1Password using "my" Apple ID, I've just breached the license. That would also mean I could go to my neighbor's houses, my relatives...anyone who owns a Mac and login to the MAS and download 1Password (using my Apple ID) onto their Macs. I think you might want to check on this one because I honestly believe I'm correct. I'm not arguing for the sake of arguing...I'm trying to be honest and not take something that isn't mine.

Now, if this wasn't her own Mac, but mine, and she was just using it, then you would most likely be correct. But this isn't the case. If I'm wrong, I just wasted $50 purchasing another MAS 1Password license using "her" Apple ID for "her" machine.

Andrew, just wanted to see if you did any further research on this? Did I waste $50, or given my circumstances, was this my only choice? Thanks.

    Hi @LarryMcJ,

Apple says that you can install apps purchased from the Mac App Store on any computer "you own or control". We take that to mean just about any Mac in your house.

You can read about this in Mac App Store FAQ's on Apple's web site: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4461

Or if you want to get really technical, you can read the iTunes Terms & Conditions: http://www.apple.com/legal/internet-services/itunes/us/terms.html

Ouch! Since I just bought the second copy of 1Password only a few days ago, I wonder if I can go through the normal refund process with iTunes and just say that I already own a copy of the license but didn't realize it could be installed on the second computer? And if I do that, when I go to install it on her Mac, I presume I just use my Apple ID instead of hers?

    Hi @LarryMcJ,

I'm sorry that you've been having trouble with licensing here. Unfortunately, we can't process refunds ourselves for items sold on Apple's App Store. Apple maintains all control over transactions including refunds. You'll have to request the refund from them.

You can request a refund for any app on the App Store by following this process:

    • Visit https://reportaproblem.apple.com
    • Sign In with your Apple ID.
    • Click “Report a Problem” on the app you wish to receive a refund on.
    • Choose “Problem is not listed here” and be sure to mention that you are asking for a refund because it doesn’t work as expected.

That said, if Apple refuses the refund, send us a copy of your receipt from Apple, along with a copy of their refusal email, and we'll see if we can do anything.

As for the installation process on your wife's computer, you are correct. Simply sign out of the App Store with her AppleID, sign in with yours and install 1Password for her. Please note that your AppleID will be required each time there is an update.

I hope this gets you all sorted out, but please do let us know if you have any further questions!

And @AndrewParker, thanks for helping to explain Apple's licensing process. :)

Thanks, Megan...and I know you can't process refunds, that's why I said I'd just ask for one via the iTunes process. The only thing I'll do differently than your procedure, unless your recommend differently, is when I login to ask for the refund, I'll use her Apple ID, since that is the ID I used to purchase the second copy of 1Password. I'm sure those four bullets were from "TextExpander" :-)

Also, I presume when I uninstall 1Password and then reinstall if from my MAS version, it will recognize the iCloud sync and install all her logins?

    Hi @LarryMcJ‌

Oops, you caught me ... I'm glad at least one of us is paying attention here! Looks like I'll need another cup of coffee. :) Yes, please log in with the AppleID that you used to make the purchase when you request the refund.

And you're correct. Uninstalling here should consist only of dragging the 1Password app to the Trash, and emptying the Trash. When you install 1Password from your AppleID, it should detect the iCloud data and prompt you to use it. If you hit any snags though, we're here for you!
