Password History

Hi. I feel like this feature existed before and has disappeared (or moved to a location I can't find any more).
I often end up generating passwords for other people (setting up their accounts) and I swear I used to be able to use the UI to see exactly which passwords were generated, and when, etc. Now the little quick panel seems to have a password history feature, but clicking on it does nothing (well, nothing useful for me - I suspect it is trying to fill in something).

Do I really have to SAVE every password I create in my database -- these are "throwaway" passwords for me, but I need to find and work with them for a short time after I create them. I feel like this information was available before but has been lost.

Thanks!

Any password you generate which is not linked to a specific saved login item should appear in your Passwords category in the left panel. Does that help?

    Hi Dave ( @davegriffin ),

I'm sorry to hear that you're having trouble finding your generated passwords. I'm curious, where are you currently looking for them? Every password generated by 1Password that is not saved in a Login will be stored in the 'Passwords' category, which should be visible in the sidebar.

Does the program store all previous passwords saved. as I have misplaced one and then i clicked on save with an unsuccessful guess. I would like to see all passwords I have used for this log in. is that when I would go to passwords option?

  • Hi @janie6420,

If you'd like to view the previous passwords for a specific Login item, click the show previously used passwords button:

Please let us know if you have any other questions. We're always happy to help! :)

Thank you. Perhaps I need to have a different version of the product because I cannot see that option. Only show web form details.

@janie6420‌ I believe it will only show you that button if 1Password is aware of previous passwords, otherwise it simply doesn't display the option.

    Hi @janie6420,

When an item doesn't have a show previously used passwords button you can search the Passwords category for a Password item with a "misplaced" password that might not have been added to a Login item.

I too have the same problem and after reading several of these posts, I figured it out.
For some strange reason, the "Show previously used passwords" button is NOT available when you are in Edit mode. So, Save or Cancel edits to the item and the button will appear. - I hope this helps.

Thanks for the tip @CocoD‌! You are correct that we hide Show previously used passwords in edit mode, as we don't want those to be editable. :)

Is there a way to show previously generate passwords for a password item? I looked for the history section as you have with login items but I can't find it.

  • Hi @oskilo‌, Password items currently do not carry a password history like Logins do. We'll definitely take it under consideration, though.

    Hi @oskilo‌

If you're asking specifically about a Password item then sadly the answer is no, we don't retain a history of passwords for those items. A password history is stored for at least Login, Server and Wireless Router items but not Password items. I do apologise that we don't have a better answer at this time.

That is unfortunate. I do use password items to store application passwords that don't have an associated website or username. Luckily, I had a backup and was able to restore an older copy of my vault. I seems a simple feature to add since you already keep history for other items. Hopefully we'll see it i in the next version.

  • @oskilo‌ Honestly, I use Logins for application logins, too. I just don't fill in the unnecessary fields. Something to consider.
