Incorrect Password Autofill With Extensions [resolved by saving new Login item in main application]

There is a website that I use frequently which has a login I've stored in 1Password. When I use the browser extension to autofill the user name and password, the password fills in incorrectly. Judging by the length of the password it inputs, I am guessing that it is using an old password for the same website.

If I am on the website in question and click the key icon in my browser, the popup lists both the correct username and the correct password. I can even use the "copy" function to manually insert the password, and that works perfectly. It's only the autofill that seems to be incorrect.

I have tried this using both Safari and Chrome and the problem is occurs in both browsers.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Is it possible the site has some restriction on the length of the password that can be used? Sometimes this creates problems similar to those you describe.

Thanks for your reply Stephen. The website does not have a specific limitation on password length. My current password is nearly twice the length of my old one, and it works perfectly when I copy/paste the password from the browser extension interface. It only inputs incorrectly with autofill.

It seems as if, for some reason, 1Password's autofill function is using an outdated password for this site. I can't think of any other explanation.

    Hi @ndsmith,

Since you mention that copying and pasting your password works, but filling fails, I think that @Stephen_C is right on the money here. We've been seeing a few issues lately with sites that have less-than-obvious limitations on password length.

The explanation here is a bit more complicated than 1Password's fill feature using an older version of the password. The short version is that pasting and filling are read differently by the website. The website will read the pasted password the same way it read a too-long password when it is originally typed it in, which is why pasting will succeed. 1Password's fill feature acts differently though, so the same password will get rejected when filled directly.

Unfortunately, there's no easy way to determine these hidden limitations on password length. Most users have had to resort to trial and error to determine the acceptable password length. If you send us the URL of the site in question, we might be able to help you track things down.

Thanks for the reply @Megan !

I wonder if you are right about the website length requirement. (And sorry Stephen if I didn't understand your post!) If that's the case, then it is nice to hear that both 1Password and I are doing everything correct.

I will say this: it would be strange if this website has some hidden limitations on password length. The website is the library login for my university, and the same password autofill works on other interfaces throughout the university. The university utilizes a centralized system for login management. (I have multiple web addresses listed under the same login entry in 1Password, and the other sites work correctly using the fill feature.) It is only the library login that doesn't fill correctly. Here is the web address in case you are curious: https://login.ezp.lib.rochester.edu/login

Regardless, I was most concerned about this being a result of some error. If it is just a quirk of the specific website, then I can deal with that. Copying and pasting is still a lot easier than typing it out long hand!

    Hi @ndsmith,

Thanks so much for sending along that URL! I spoke with one of our filling gurus this morning to see if we could get a better idea of what is going on here. The fact that it fills properly on other sites means I may have been wrong in my initial assessment. It looks like this website uses the same ID for both the username and password fields, so 1Password might be filling your details in an incorrect field. Let's try re-creating this entry using the main app, instead of asking the extension to save the details.

    • In the main app, click the '+' button to create a new item
    • Select Login
    • Fill all your necessary details
    • Save
    • Click the URL in the entry - does 1Password open and fill correctly now?
