Duplicate entries, other strangeness, and a ? about the MAS version

Just bought a copy yesterday. Things are going pretty smoothly so far, but I do have a few issues.

After populating the app with my data, I noticed a couple of poor quality passwords for important sites. After going back to those site and replacing them with 1P generated passwords, I found that if I logged out and tried to log back in using 1P, my password was invalid. I eventually discovered that duplicate entries had been created in the 'Passwords' category, and that they had the updated passwords. Do I need to work on my methodology, or is this a bug?

I also found an entry in 'Password' for 1P. There's no account name associated with it, just a URL:

app://com.agilebits.onepassword-osx

Is that supposed to be there? If it isn't, it's very possible that user error is to blame. (I spent an hour or so last night moving entries, I may well have zoned out and done something silly.)

Finally, I bought 1P in the app store. Will this make future upgrades more expensive? Are there any limitations to the MAS version that I should be aware of? I saw the sale price and jumped on it. :(

Cheers

    Hi @IronyParachute‌

Thanks so much for your support of 1Password! I'll do what I can to help get you straightened out here.

After going back to those site and replacing them with 1P generated passwords, I found that if I logged out and tried to log back in using 1P, my password was invalid.

Generating a new password in 1Password Mini's password generator does not also change the password in your Login. After changing the passwords on the site, did 1Password pop up and offer to update the existing Login entries for you?

I eventually discovered that duplicate entries had been created in the 'Passwords' category, and that they had the updated passwords.

All passwords that are generated in 1Password will be stored in the 'Passwords' category after you've selected the 'Fill' or 'Copy' option. They will be stored there until they are converted into a Login. This category is essentially a safeguard to ensure that if you don't immediately update the Login entry you don't lose the password.

Do I need to work on my methodology

Here's the workflow I use for changing a password:

    • Go to the "change password" page of the website (this location depends on the way the website is set up, but it's often under the account settings section).
    • Copy and paste your current password from 1Password into the ‘current password’ field (if there is one)
    • When you are presented with the fields to change your password, you can click the 1Password extension, and choose the password generator (the icon that looks like a combination lock) to create a custom random strong password.
    • Click the Fill button.
    • After filling it on the webpage, 1Password should then prompt you to update your saved login for this site.
    • If 1Password does not prompt you to update your Login, that strong password you just generated has been saved to your clipboard by default when you clicked 'Fill', so all you have to do is open your Login in 1Password and paste the new password in the appropriate field!
    • Please note, (as I mentioned above) that new password is also saved under your Passwords tab automatically.

I also found an entry in 'Password' for 1P. There's no account name associated with it, just a URL:

    app://com.agilebits.onepassword-osx

Is that supposed to be there?

As mentioned above, the 'Passwords' category is for all generated passwords that haven't yet found a home in a Login. When these passwords are generated, 1Password will list the password based on the app or website that has focus on the screen. This helps you to differentiate between a generated password created for Facebook and Evernote.app for example. I certainly don't think user error is to blame here - the passwords category took a while for me to wrap my head around as well! I hope my explanations here help.

Finally, I bought 1P in the app store. Will this make future upgrades more expensive?

We only just finished releasing 1Password 4 across all of the platforms a few months ago, we haven't quite planned out the details of our future releases yet! ;) I can assure you though that we do try to keep paid upgrades as few and far between as possible. 1Password 3 was the first paid upgrade in AgileBits history and since then, we have released 66 free upgrades to 1Password 3 for Mac. The next paid upgrade didn't come around again until the release of the completely re-designed 1Password 4 in 2012, and we ensured that all existing users got a great upgrade discount. What I'm saying is, whether you purchased from the Mac App Store or directly via our website, we'll take care of you. :)

Are there any limitations to the MAS version that I should be aware of?

The Mac App Store version and our webstore version are essentially the same app, with some minor backend differences due to Apple's sandboxing regulations. You can read more here: Where to Purchase. One thing to keep in mind with the Mac App Store version is that (again due to these sandboxing guidelines) you may notice that 1Password is not always able to submit your entries after filling. If you do notice this, you can improve 1Password's behaviour by installing this Autosubmit Script.

I hope this helps, but we're here if you have any further questions or concerns!

Thanks for the excellent reply. I've got a much better handle on the workings of the app now.

  • On behalf of Megan, you're welcome. Please let us know if you have any other questions! :)
