Managing/Deleting vaults in 1Password 4 [Win]

I am just trying the new 1Password 4 after reinstalling windows. I noticed that there is an ability to use more than 1 vault. I'm curious to know why there is no ability to have separate filenames that correspond to different vaults (each vault has the same 1Password.agilekeychain folder name) to make it easier to manage (e.g. xxxxxxxxxxx.1Password.agilekeychain).

I got confused when I loaded a backup to compare 2 vaults together; that's when I first noticed that multiple vaults were allowed simultaneously. So then when I went to use 1P in different browsers, I saw that I had an option to switch between vaults. But I was finished with the second vault and wished to delete it from the list and I could not find any documentation in the help file or online.

I figured it out by
a) unselecting the vault I wanted removed (select a different vault),
b) deleting/moving the unwanted vault in windows explorer, and then
c) going back to 1password and trying to select the vault that was deleted resulted in an error message from 1P.

Immediately afterwards I tried to view the multiple vaults again and the desired vault was removed from the list. This is less than ideal.

So a suggestion also to have an ability to manage multiple vaults. The options menu would need an ability to manage multiple vault storage locations, and an ability to either designate 1 primary/default vault, or list the priority order of each vault. But if you are unwilling to get that sophisticated yet, at least provide an ability to manage the list of vaults; that would be nice.

You can chose whichever name you like when you create a new vault.
I think you can also rename a vault by simply renaming the folder in explorer.

The reason you have two vaults with the same name is that on both Windows installations you have simply accepted the default name.

The default vault name is 1Password (and thus its folder name is 1Password.agilekeychain).

By the rules of Windows (and other operating systems) you cannot have two files or folders in the same directory with the same name. Only because your two vaults are in different folders (one in ...\Dropbox\1Password, one in ...\Documents) can they have the same name.

If you moved the latter one to Dropbox, it would get (or you'd have to create) a different name: something-else.agilekeychain.

If you manually remove a .agilekeychain folder, you will naturally be unable to view its contents. Fortunately, it's probably still in your Windows "recycle bin", in which case you can simply drag it where you want it and open it from within 1Password again.

The New 1Password Vault, Open 1Password Vault, and Reopen 1Password Vault commands already give you the ability to create and switch among multiple vaults. The only feature missing (in terms of parity with 1Password for Mac, anyway) is the ability to use a single master password to gain instant access to all your vaults; this is because 1Password for Windows doesn't include the concept of "primary" and "secondary" vaults. Multiple vaults, though, have been a feature of 1Password for Windows since day 1 (some five years ago), in which sense its support long predates that in 1Password for Mac. :)

Thanks for the suggestion of including a way to "remove" no longer existing vaults from the "recently used" list. I can see how that would be useful if you have more than a handful of vaults and you delete one or more of them frequently.

I have a related, but different problem. My wife and I recently started using 1Password. She created her first vault on her iPhone and I created mine in Windows 7. We both independently used the suggested name "1Password" for our vaults. When we tried to share our vaults over DropBox, it became difficult to tell the two vaults apart when trying to open one or the other.

I would like to rename my vault from "1Password.agilekeychain" to "JohnDoe.agilekeychain" or something like that.

    1. Is there a simple command to do that? If not,

    2. Is there a not-so-simple way to do it, and what are the detailed steps? If not,

    3. Should I create a new, appropriately-named vault and transfer everything over?

    Please advise.

    Here's option 2. :)

    1. Launch 1Password for Windows, press Ctrl+P, and select the General tab.
    2. Note the full path and filename in the 1Password Vault field.
    3. Choose File > Exit to quit 1Password for Windows completely.
    4. In File Explorer (the one you use to view files and folders, not the Internet Explorer web browser), locate the 1Password.agilekeychain folder.
    5. Click on that folder, and change its name to JohnDoe.agilekeychain or something like that.
    6. Launch 1Password for Windows.
    7. If it offers to open the newly renamed folder, accept the offer.

      —or—

If it presents the "first-time user" window:

...choose the I have used 1Password before option, and locate and choose the JohnDoe.agilekeychain folder.

I hope that helps, John. Please let us know how it goes!

Thanks, D. Your explanation was great and the name change worked fine. I realize my question was trivial now that I made the change, but I just didn't want to mess up anything I didn't fully understand.

No problem, John! Caution with your 1Password data is prudent, and we're glad to help in any way we can.

I am totally confused as I received a 'first time user' window on my home Win 7 comp (pc1) then my work Win 7 comp (pc2). It was unexpected and I don't know what I did to cause it. Now I'm getting an error: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/81383/1Password dropbox sync problem.JPG

I've used 1 Password since it was released for Mac. With 1 Password 3 and 4, I've been using it Windows only. I've always upgraded with no problem.

Best I can tell, it started when I installed dropbox on a new home machine I just built, also running Win 7: (pc3) . I think I installed 1 Password4 on that new home machine. I think my problem is similar to the one above. In the meantime I went to 'backups' and clicked a keychain so I could access sites. I looked in my Dropbox folder for any deleted keychain or vault, but I didn't see it.

I'm guessing that this could be a problem of me installing Dropbox on pc3. What is likely to have happened? Does the info above apply or should this be it's own thread? Thanks.

Let's see: PCs 1 and 2 were sharing a Dropbox-synced vault, presumably named 1Password (the default name), which means their local Dropbox storage contained a folder named 1Password.agilekeychain.

On PC 3: If you first installed 1Password and created a new vault, it would (by default) be named 1Password. If you then installed Dropbox and moved your vault there while Dropbox was trying to copy your existing 1Password.agilekeychain folder, I'm not sure what would happen. :/

The proper order would've been to install Dropbox on that third PC, let Dropbox completely finish copying your existing vault down from your private dropbox.com web site, and then install 1Password and let it automatically detect that vault and offer to open it for you.

(You won't find a deleted "keychain or vault" in your Dropbox folder, because deleted folders go to the Recycle Bin in Windows. You might still find it on your private dropbox.com web site, if you enable the "view deleted items" option. You might keep that in mind, in case the following fails for some reason.)

    Moving forward

At this point, you've restored your 1Password data from a 1Password backup, so you need to make sure all three PCs are using exactly the same Dropbox-synced vault. You can tell by comparing the path shown on the General tab of 1Password preferences on all three machines. Everything after "Dropbox" in all three of them must be exactly the same, as in C:...\Dropbox\1Password.agilekeychain.

Start on the machine where the data is complete, and make sure the other two match, at least after the "Dropbox" part.

I hope that helps, @cracker. Please let us know how it goes.

DBrown, Thank you so much for your thorough and very clear explanation. I'm working retail during the holidays so my brain is pretty fried. I'll give this a whirl!

Happy holidays, @cracker. When you get a break, TAKE IT. (I've done retail at the holidays.)

When you get a second or third break and feel like messing with this again, let us know how it goes. :)
