Attachment sync from iCloud to Mac broken (1PW Mac 500019, iOS 5.1.1)

I have attachments on the iOS side (in notes and login cards) they fail to sync into the Mac.

The attachments make it from iOS to iCloud OK. I checked by deleting data on iOS and syncing back from iCloud.

However, fresh sync on Mac from iOS does not get any attachments from iCloud.

Adding attachment to a card on the Mac will show up ok on the iOS.

In summary, attachment sync

  • Mac --> iCloud = OK

  • iCloud --> Mac = Broken

Update: Both are app store versions.

@rolfl‌ I realise it isn't iCloud like yours but WiFi syncing of attachments is a fairly new feature and when I first could use it I had no joy. What I found worked for me was creating new items and copying all the data and the attachment(s) to the new item. That worked and then I deleted the old item that wasn't playing nicely. I don't know why and because I only had a few items it wasn't a big issue for me. So I'm wondering, does this happen for both existing items and new items in your case?

I think this is a systematic bug on iCloud to Mac sync, it also happens for new items.

    e.g.

    1) Create new item with attachment on Mac

    2) Sync Mac to to iCloud

    3) Attachment shows up OK on iOS

    4) Disable sync on Mac

    5) Delete All items on Mac, empty Trash

    6) Enable iCloud Sync on Mac

    7) No attachments on Mac

@rolfl‌ I'd like to ask you to create a Diagnostics Report from your Mac:
    https://guides.agilebits.com/kb/1password4/en/topic/diagnostics-report#mac4

Then attach the entire file to an email to us: support+forum@agilebits.com

Please do not post your Diagnostics Report in the forums, but please do include a link to this thread in your email, along with your forum handle so that we can "connect the dots" when we see your Diagnostics Report in our inbox.

A short note here once you've sent the Report in will help us to keep an eye out for it. :)

Once we see the report we should be able to better assist you. Thanks in advance!

Hi @rolfl‌ I can't find a diagnostic report from the email address you use here on the forums (but that may be me as I'm still getting used to stuff). Could you message me directly please with the email address you did use. Matching the ticket up with this thread will help speed things along. Cheers!

    Hi @littlebobbytables‌

Here are a couple of additional clues:

    1) If I do a complete "start over" and deleted the db as described in https://guides.agilebits.com/1password-mac-kb/5/en/topic/starting-over.

The attachments synced over OK on initial sync.

    If I then ------>

    1) Disable sync on Mac

    2) Delete All items on Mac, empty Trash

    3) Enable iCloud Sync on Mac

    4) Wait for sync to complete

There are No attachments on Mac

There must be something not properly cleaned up/corrupted in the attachment db causing the issue of syncing attachments.

@littlebobbytables‌ Any chance this fix can be shared since I and others are havving a problem with attachments syncing across iOS and Mac on the latest 1P apps and latest operating systems.

    Hi @planetkingdom‌

In this instance I believe there wasn't a fix from the perspective of the user. My understanding from reviewing the ticket is we have a bug which we're working on fixing in a future release. Sorry I couldn't offer a better response. I am assuming though that you are also syncing via iCloud and you seem to be experiencing rolfl's symptoms exactly as they were describing them?

  • Hi @rolfl,

It's difficult to tell for certain given the information here, but it's certainly possible that you're running into an issue we fixed a few weeks ago where iCloud sync would get stuck on certain attachments. It was certainly more likely to happen if you deleted the attachment locally when you were disconnected from Sync then would re-enable it. It would fail to re-download it. This fix will be available in 1Password for Mac 5.1 and 1Password for iOS 5.2.

    Hi @rickfillion‌
I'm also having issues with getting attachments to sync. Certain logins with attachments sync the attachments just fine, while others don't. Can you help?

Also, if I want to share an item, that includes an attachment, with another 1Password user, is there a way to do that?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi @The18thLetter‌

If it's just certain items does post #2 in this thread work for you at all?

As for your second question. There isn't a direct way I'm afraid. If I was in your position I'd consider the following options.

When you share a 1Password item it's encrypted but with a shared key so better to consider it obfuscation. That means you'd want to use something like iMessage which is also encrypted.

Depending on the size, sensitivity of the attachments and if you're sharing them with a fellow Mac user you could store them in an encrypted disk image which you send to them either via email or Dropbox and place the key to the disk image in the item.

Another option could be sharing a secondary vault depending on if you want to keep the details of this item in sync. Certainly sharing a secondary vault would also share attachments.

I realise neither is exactly what you were hoping for but could they be possible workarounds?

    Hi @littlebobbytables‌

The direction in post #2 did help, though it took a lot of work to complete. A bunch of weird things happened while trying to duplicate, copy, and paste: sync took longer than normal from Mac to iPad/iPhone, deleting old items from Mac did not delete from iOS apps, renaming entries didn't sync, etc. All in all, I got it to work, but it was more than just creating new items and copying all the data and attachments.

So, is this a bug, or are using & syncing attachments just a thing where I'll need to verify any items with attachments going forward? (I'm know it's a good idea to verify everything anyways, but remembering to verify things all the time could be a hassle when you expect things to just work.)

    Thanks.

P.S. Despite the trouble I'm having, I want to be clear that 1Password is an invaluable tool for me, and I thank you guys for such a great product. Me having a technical issue does not mean that I don't love 1Password. 1P is the best, and I couldn't imagine my Mac or iOS devices without it.

    Thanks again.

    Hi @The18thLetter‌

Syncing attachments is an area that we've been improving on. As a Wi-Fi Sync user I know I had to wait a while before I could sync attachments. When it arrived certain old items with attachments just wouldn't sync properly but new items would - I don't know what the bug was but I believe the solution was a one-time effort of replacing the broken items with new ones, the bug shouldn't reappear.

Syncing of attachments is still a work in progress. For example whilst checking stuff before replying I discovered items attached to Password items don't seem to sync but the attachment will appear instantly if the Password item is converted to a Login item. I need to do some more testing but I believe this is working properly in the latest betas.

So for peace of mind I'd say check and see if attachments are syncing especially if added to a new item type for the first time. You shouldn't have to and as I say, I think the next version will eliminate a good few bugs relating to sync.

I am troubled you had such a hassle with what should have been a relatively simple process though. Deletions should sync, name changes should sync. I'd say it's worth keeping an eye on.
