Mac store and direct purchase - same version but not the same features

After buying and supporting 1 Password for years and buying direct - because normally even when an app I trust and use gets into Apple's Mac store it sometimes also has limitations, I was saddened to hear the Mac App Store version of 1Password for Mac is the only one that can only be used for iCloud Sync.

I am a disabled pensioner in my 60's and cannot afford several versions of software I already own because one version of the SAME software has perks others don't, and in my opinion this should not happen for basic functions like syncing. Yes i understand there are other ways to achieve the same result e.g. i use WIFI sync but it should not happen or at the very least there should be an option to buy a reasonably cheap upgrade

  • Hi @Lore,

1Password 5 for Mac is a major release and one of the significant changes we made was a complete rewrite of iCloud syncing. 1Password 5 switched to the new Apple iCloud "CloudKit" technology which is only available on OS X Yosemite and iOS 8, and limited to Mac App Store apps only. After this change we were no longer able to offer iCloud syncing in the web store version of 1Password.

We've put together a FAQ page with more information here:

    Web store and iCloud FAQ

I also want to make sure that you have a chance to review some more information on iCloud and why the Mac App Store is the only version that has access to that particular sync option. Roustem, one of our founders, has written a blog post on the iCloud rewrite and I’d like to share it with you:

About iCloud changes in 1Password 5

The only way to use iCloud in 1Password 5 is to purchase directly from the Mac App Store. Unfortunately there is no way for us to transfer your purchase from our store to Apple's. I’m sorry we don’t have a better migration path for you.

If you have any other questions, please send us an email and we can assist.

This needs to be fixed immediately. I just purchased on your site and after wondering why it wasn't working I found this.... This is seriously messed up.

@Lore and @Sk_illed. This is Apple's issue, not AgileBits. I am not sure whether AgileBits currently make the difference as clear as it could be on their web page. It is mentioned at several places, but perhaps should be made more prominent. But the actual difference is not something they can do anything about.

And Dropbox sync works fine on both versions, and is used by many people including AgileBits employees. I would recommend using it.

    Hi @Lore and @Sk_illed‌

In addition to the links supplied by JasperP we have also have an announcement by Dave Teare here in these forums regarding this. If you've read the other links you'll find it contains similar details.

What we've never wanted to do is have diverging feature lists between the two versions. There were always differences (the MAS version has to be sandboxed) but the goal was to make these differences invisible to the user in terms of their experiences.

This all changed in 1Password 5.

Apple aren't shy at making changes they deem necessary, even if painful in the short-term. They looked at their current implementation for iCloud and decided they needed to do better and this is where iCloud Drive & CloudKit came from. Where the pain starts is only iOS 8 and Yosemite can access this new iCloud.

For any person who upgraded to iCloud Drive when iOS 8 came out they instantly lost the ability to sync any program with their Mac - it wasn't limited to just 1Password.

In terms of our loyal users, transitioning to CloudKit meant 1Password 5 was limited to iCloud syncing with other instances of 1Password 5 (it was believed Yosemite and iOS 8 were going to be released at the same time) but Apple also decided to start enforcing restrictions on the use of iCloud frameworks - CloudKit would be limited to applications purchased in either app store (iOS or OS X). Staying current with Apple meant it became impossible to offer iCloud support to our web store customers.

Unless Apple decide to reverse their decision it will remain impossible to offer iCloud support in the web store version. We also don't have any way to mass move customers to the Mac App Store. It isn't what we wanted but it's the situation that both us and our customers are in.

The only positive I can offer is that if you're willing to consider Dropbox it is a cross-platform sync method. It works everywhere iCloud does and more.
