Set Up Help

Hello,

I just purchased 1Password for my Mac and plan to incorporate it with my iOS devices. This is going to sound idiotic, but I have NO idea how to start setting up passwords. Do I go to "Passwords" and start it that way? For instance, if I'm setting up an Amazon password, is it that intuitive that it can figure it out on it's own? I see no area to put the website in. I feel like an idiot, but I'm confused. On top of that, the email section seems like I need to be an IT professional.

Is there a resource online to help out with this? I couldn't find anything on the website.

Have a look at this page in the user manual about saving a login. Other parts of the user manual will probably also help: you'll find a lot of other useful information there once you've read that page.

If you go to this page you'll find a link to the iOS user guide as well as links to the knowledgebases for both 1P for Mac and 1P for iOS.

Much appreciated Stephen, but I'm looking to figure out the step before saving a login. Literally setting up my email, website passwords, etc. I open the app on my computer and I'm lost. I know there's not such a thing as a stupid question, but I feel pretty close here.

    Hi @radioactivebug‌

Lets start with the Email Account Item. The reason it can look a little daunting is it's about recording all the data you would need to create an email account in a program like Mail or Thunderbird. Now they (the email clients) are more friendly than they once were and they can try looking up a lot of those details from a database but go back not that far and you had to manually add all the information in. So it would really useful to have a record stored with your username and password.

If all you want to do is store a Gmail username and password you're better off using a Login item. That way 1Password can fill in your login credentials for you (Email Account items can't).

As for website passwords, there are a couple of ways of doing so. You can create new items directly in 1Password and simply add your username and password in the applicable fields. To have 1Password assist and fill in these details you want to use the website field for the URL.

Here's why the link Stephen_C posted to you will be helpful. If you log into sites as you normally do 1Password will offer to save the details. The advantage is it will store the precise URL for the login page. It knows it because that's the URL when it observed you were entering a username and password into a page. Some sites are just awkward and require a little more cunning to get them to cooperate properly but we'll leave that for just now.

    Does this begin to help?

This most definitely helps! That being said, if I login/set up 1Password through the browser will it sync up with my iOS devices so I can use the Touch ID? And if I change passwords, can I do it through 1Password?

    Thanks for your help!

In order to sync your passwords, etc., with your iOS devices you need 1P for iOS on those devices and that is a separate app. There is a free version of it which you can try—with an in-app purchase to upgrade it if you want to. You can read about it here.

This part of the user manual will help you with sync options but the really important thing to note is that you can use iCloud to sync only if you bought 1P from the Mac App Store (and not if you bought it direct from AgileBits). You can use Dropbox or wifi sync with either version.

Yes, you can change a saved password through 1P. Here's the page of the user manual that shows you how to do that.
