1Password vs "1Password 4" folder in Library/Application Support
Hello,
I need to know where does 1Password 5 on Yosemite stores all its files.
I have 2 different folders:
- 1Password (1Password.agilekeychain / Agent folder / Backups folder / Extensions folder);
- 1Password 4 (Backups / Data (with OnePassword.sqlite) / Mustaches-001 / Watchtower)
I read in the KB the "1Password 4" folder should be the newest one (I'm using 1Password 5.0.2 007) so why some backup files are apparently placed in both folders?
Is it possibile to keep everything inside one and only 1Password folder?
thank you.

Have you looked at this knowledgebase article on where 1P5 stores its files? Sorry if you've already seen it but it wasn't clear from your post.

@Stephen_C Hi, as I wrote <<I read in the KB the "1Password 4" folder should be the newest one (I'm using 1Password 5.0.2 007) so why some backup files are apparently placed in both folders?>>
So the KB is wrong. I see backups on both "1Password" and "1Password 4" folder!
Also, if the folder for the v. 5 release is "1Password 4", why the DropBox keychain file is in the old v3 folder?0 -
Where did you download 1P5: from the Mac App Store or direct from AgileBits? If the Mac App Store did you ever also download a version of 1P4 or 1P5 direct from AgileBits (perhaps a beta version)? If you did a straight upgrade from 1P4 to 1P5 you should not have two backup backup folders (although it's possible you might have a separate 1P3 one still, which would now be inactive). The knowledgebase is not wrong. There is something strange about your system.

@stephen_C : it's the direct AgileBits version. It was a v. 3-beta-something (on Snow Leopard) then I updated to v. 4 and 5 (on Yosemite).
I did the DropxBox syncronization only a few days ago, using the v. 5 and that's why I'm asking the reason of the keychain file being inside the old "1Password" folder.
Is it better to uninstall and reinstall? Or may I move manually all the files to the "1Password 4" folder? thank you for helping!

Hi @webby1973,
Thanks for writing in, that's a great question. The "1Password" directory in ~/Library/Application Support/ would be 1Password3 while "1Password 4" is the data directory for both 1Password4 and 1Password5.
When updating to v4 or v5, it should have migrated your data to the new folder, but should also have left all old files in place. The reason for this is so that you could still go back and use 1Password3 if you wanted. The data won't stay in sync with v4 or v5 automatically, but it gives you the flexibility of having a still-working v3 setup.
v3's native database format was the AgileKeychain, which explains why you're seeing it in v3's AppSupport directory. In v4 and v5, the native database of the app is no longer AgileKeychain but a sqlite database. v4 and v5 only use AgileKeychain as a sync format now so you won't see one in its AppSupport directory.
If you never plan on using v3 ever again, then I'd say you're safe to delete its AppSupport directory. It shouldn't cause you any harm to leave it there though. Do not manually move files from the v3 AppSupport directory into v4/5's.
I hope this helps.

@rickfillion : thank you! I deleted the old "1Password" folder now, and re-synched with DropBox (uhm now it shows new files with looong names every minute, but I'll open a new thread about it).

On behalf of @rickfillion, you're very welcome! Please let us know if you need anything else.

Thanks @rickfillion, this is what I was trying to find out as well. Making a backup of my whole system before reinstalling / updating it and was wondering if I needed the 1Password folder (not to be confused with the 1 Password 4 folder).
If I may ask.. I noticed the 1 Password folder's size is 1 GB. Is this a normal size for a backup of ±400 mostly internet logins? Even including comments and some room for encryption, 2 MB per login seems a lot for plain text.

Hi @laptopleon,
You're right, 1GB does seem very large. I doubt it's the login items that are taking that much room, those are usually less than a kb a piece. It may be going into the directory and looking for the large files to see what they could be, I don't know off the top of my head what it could be. Attachments maybe?

To be clear: That's the old 1Password folder of the pre-1PW4 versions, the current folder is only a fraction of that.

Hi @laptopleon
It's definitely a very unusual size but as long as you're not interested in going back to 1Password 3 (which seems quite unlikely at this point) then as rickfillion said, you can remove it and reclaim the space. If you're concerned or curious at all though you can use Finder to order the files by size using the List view option (keyboard shortcut
⌘2
). If it's anything odd you can certainly ask.0 -
I have a similar situation. I have used 1Password for a while - since V3.x I think, now using Version 5.
In my Application Support folder I have "1Password" and "1Password 4" folders. (see screen shot). Each of them has a Backups folder in it, and each of these folders contain a number of files dating back to March 2014, and continuing up to very recently. The files in "1Password 4/Backups" are under 1MB each, the files in "1Password/Backups" are around 13MB each.
I have synching via DropBox enabled, and in my DropBox folder I have a folder "1Password" that contains a "1Password.agilekeychain" file, and a "1Password.agilekeychain" file - both of these updated recently.
Since these files - the agilekeychain and the backups are regularly updated, they both seem to be in use, but from the above it seems this shouldn't be the case?
Any clarification on what I can delete, and why backups are being apparently made with different files in different places?
Thanks
Roger

Hi Roger ( @theKiwi ),
Thanks for taking the time to write such a detailed post!
Since these files - the agilekeychain and the backups are regularly updated, they both seem to be in use, but from the above it seems this shouldn't be the case?
It sounds like you might have an active process from 1Password 3 still running here. Please follow the instructions in our Completely uninstalling 1Password 3 guide. This will stop those backups from being created. Once you've followed those directions, you can remove the 1Password 3 app, and the '1Password' folder in Application Support as well.
I have synching via DropBox enabled, and in my DropBox folder I have a folder "1Password" that contains a "1Password.agilekeychain" file, and a "1Password.agilekeychain" file - both of these updated recently.
Do you have multiple vaults enabled in 1Password 5 for Mac? If so, then it is possible to have multiple .agilekeychain files stored in Dropbox. In this case, however, it seems to me like you might have devices syncing up to different keychains. Take a look at each device that is currently syncing to Dropbox: which path do they show for the location of the sync file? (For Mac, you'll find this in Preferences > Sync, if you're using iOS devices, go to Settings > Sync.)
Please let me know if your computers are not all syncing to the same keychain. We'll need to reset sync to get everything on the same page. :)
Just for future reference, the modified date on these files is not a reliable indicator of when data inside the keychain has been changed. This is because the 1Password.agilekeychain is actually a file bundle with several folders containing all your data inside. For example: 1Password.agilekeychain/data/default. (You can see the file structure yourself by right-clicking on the 1Password.agilekeychain file and selecting 'Show Package Contents'.)
Since the operating system only changes the 'Date Modified' for the next level folder, the date modified on the 1Password.agilekeychain itself will not reflect if/when changes have been made within the data/default folder.
I hope this helps, but we're here if you have any further questions or concerns. :)

Thanks Megan - I've been away for 11 days, and am just getting to this now...
I've run the Uninstaller app and it returned this
Stopping and removing 1PasswordAgent *
launchctl ((
remove,
"ws.agile.1PasswordAgent"
)) failed (3):
Removing file '/Users/roger/Library/LaunchAgents/ws.agile.1PasswordAgent.plist'.
Removing file '/Users/roger/Library/Application Support/1Password/Agent'.Removing 1Password Addition *
Removing Application Support files *
Removing file '/Users/roger/Library/Application Support/1Password/Extensions'.
Removing file '/Users/roger/Library/Application Support/1Password/Fill'.Completed *
From this I see that removing "ws.agile.1PasswordAgent" failed - presumably this is OK - it couldn't be found so I don't need to worry about it?
Once you've followed those directions, you can remove the 1Password 3 app, and the '1Password' folder in Application Support as well
I can't find the 1Password 3 app on my Mac
I've deleted the "1Password" folder from Application Support.
Take a look at each device that is currently syncing to Dropbox: which path do they show for the location of the sync file? (For Mac, you'll find this in Preferences > Sync, if you're using iOS devices, go to Settings > Sync.)
I have two Macs, both running Yosemite synching to DropBox. They are both synching to "roger -> Dropbox -> 1Password -> 1Password.agilekeychain" - so both using the same file.
Since the operating system only changes the 'Date Modified' for the next level folder, the date modified on the 1Password.agilekeychain itself will not reflect if/when changes have been made within the data/default folder.
OK - I've taken a look inside the Package Contents of the file that is directly in Dropbox (not in the 1Password folder) and even though its Finder Modified date is today, nothing inside it down inside all the folders has been updated since 21 Feb 2014. So I will delete this apparently unused file package.
I'll let things run like this for a few days and make sure that these apparent duplicates stay away.
Thank You for your Help!!!!
Roger

Hi Roger ( @theKiwi ),
Thanks for getting back to me! I'm glad to hear that things seem to be sorted out.
From this I see that removing "ws.agile.1PasswordAgent" failed - presumably this is OK - it couldn't be found so I don't need to worry about it?
It's not a big deal, but you can try removing it manually like so:
- Go to Finder and choose Go > Go to Folder… and enter ~/Library/LaunchAgents
- Delete ws.agile.1PasswordAgent.plist
I hope that 1Password works perfectly for you from now on, but if you hit any snags, you know where to find us - we're happy to help. ;)

Almost a month on - it seems to be working fine now.
Thanks!
