iCloud storage

Maybe I've forgotten, but I see a 4.2 MB 1Password data in my iCloud data.
Why ?
I only sync via iCloud between my Apple devices and my data is in my iMac...
Can someone help me remember the basic ?
Thanks.

    Perhaps I'm dense and I'm misunderstanding the question but my understanding is that you're looking at the sync data.

    Hi @ronen‌

    To me this looks like what you might see if you were syncing 1Password with iCloud and then upgraded to Apple's iCloud Drive.

    With the old iCloud we stored your vault in the opvault format, a standard Mac package and it was stored as files and folders. When users upgraded from the old iCloud to the new iCloud (which I believe Apple label as iCloud Drive during the upgrade process), all the files in the old iCloud were moved across to iCloud Drive. At the same time though we moved from this to using CloudKit as it promised to be a significant improvement over the old system. So if you were syncing via iCloud in 1Password 4, you upgraded to 1Password 5 and continued syncing via iCloud my assumption would be this is your old sync data.

    Thank you all !

    littlebobbytables :

    I think that your assumption is correct !

    Now , Can I delete this data safely ( Without effecting the iCloud syncing possibility ) ?

    If so , Should I delete from my iOS device or from iCloud account ?

    I don't want unnecessary data ...

    Thanks .......

    HI @ronen‌

    Before you go ahead and do so can you just confirm that you are running 1Password 5 on all your Macs and devices and that you use iCloud Drive - your screenshots don't show enough for me to be certain, partly because I don't own an iPad to compare (I really need to do something about that).

    @littlebobbytables‌

    Wow, this thread is really confusing me. I can't locate screens that exactly mimic the OP's screens but I do have something similar. Possibly the difference in appearance is OS and 1P levels. I'm using 10.10.1 and 5.02 (which is the only version of 1P that I've owned). In any event, I think that I'm seeing the same that that the OP is seeing.

    @ronen‌ & @Plato‌

    I need to spend more time mucking about with iCloud. It is the sync data so @ronen‌ you don't want to delete it. My brain fart meant I think I was confusing viewing iCloud Drive and the Manage Storage view.

    Thanks.

    If iCloud is only for syncing, why data stored is needed There ?

    iCloud should be like a transfer way to sync , not to keep ...

    Or I'm missing something?

    @ronen‌

    In order to sync iCloud does need to have a copy of the data (it is encrypted before being sent there, of course, Apple does not have access to it). If iCloud didn't have the data, all of your devices would have to be online in order to sync. And that isn't really even a choice we have... That is just how the iCloud service works. ;)

    If you'd rather have a solution that does not rely on a 3rd party data storage provider, WiFi sync can do that for you:

    Thanks.

    Hi @ronen,

    I'm sorry for the confusion here. The switch from 'old' iCloud to 'new' iCloud has been a bit complicated in some cases, and I'm honestly still trying to wrap my own brain around things - it seems that everything is named iCloud, but has different functions and duties.

    If iCloud is only for syncing, why data stored is needed There ?

    iCloud should be like a transfer way to sync , not to keep ...

    In 1Password 4/5, your data is potentially stored in two places. There is always the local store, tucked safely on your hard drive. When you choose to sync, to iCloud for example, a copy of your database is made and stored in the sync location. So there will always 1Password data in iCloud if you are using iCloud to sync. When you use 1Password, it will check the local database against the database stored in iCloud and make any changes necessary to the local database.

    I hope this helps to explain things!

    Thank you both !
    The present iCloud syncing between my devices is working perfectly.
    If the data is encrypted in iCloud I will keep it as it is .

    Again , thank you.

  • Yes indeed it is. We never trust the security of your data to a 3rd party data storage provider. Everything is always encrypted prior to being sent anywhere. :)

    Thanks!

    P.S.

    How can I see if there is two data files for 1PW in my iCloud storage or only one ?

    Any Print screen or advice will be appreciated.

  • Hi @ronen,

    From the screenshots you posted above, I can see that you only have one set of data in iCloud. I've split the posts about that issue into a new discussion to keep it separate.
