Possible to Downgrade to 1Password 3?

I've been using the software with a license for for about 5 years at this point. I have a license for 1Password 3 but have not purchased any additional upgrades. When notified by pop up of the various upgrades over the past several years I went ahead and installed them on my computer. I did this not expecting to run into a situation where I'd have to pay to continue to use the software. While fully understand why you'd want to charge for upgrades to the software after a period of usage, I hope you can understand my preference to continue to use the old version.

Is there a way therefore to "downgrade" the version that I'm using so I can use the software again?

Thanks for your help.

Assuming you purchased directly from AgileBit, you should be able to download a fresh copy of version 3 in the legacy section of the Mac download page. Scroll to the bottom of this page. You'll need to enter your older alphanumeric license key to take it back out of the trial version.

Just a reminder there is no guarantee that 1Password 3 will work with Yosemite. Many of the features of 1Password 5 have taken full advantage of Yosemite's under the hood enhancements.

Having said that there are several users in the forms that have reported success. So feel free to use it.

Just keep in mind that at some point in the future you may very well need to update 1Password. Its possible Apple could break things that are required to use 1Password 3 with an update to the OS. So each time you update the OS you are moving further away from the OS 1Password 3 was designed for. What ever Apple calls the next OS, it is possible that 1Password 3 could cease to work on the new version.

This is one of the reasons that the Agile folks post here in the forums as well as on their blog about possible issues. I would recommend subscribing to the newsletter so you can keep track of possible future changes or a combination of things.

Also if you are a member of various social media sites 1Password is quite active on them as well. Twitter and Facebook for example.

    Hi @Otis‌

I hope you found thightower's post useful. While we continue to support 1Password 3 users it is correct that it is no longer under active development meaning the possibility of compatibility issues as OS X changes. Saying that I very occasionally run 1Password 3 for troubleshooting reasons and it hasn't spat the dummy under Yosemite but I don't use it much.

To move your most current vault back to 1Password 3 your best solution is to use Folder Sync to create a 1Password.agilekeychain. As of 1Password 4 your vaults have been locally stored in an sqlite database file which you won't be able to import into 1Password 3. If we can be of any help please let us know.

Thanks for all the responses and assistance. I hadn't really considered the potential issues with Yosemite but I'll give it a shot and see how it works.

  • Thanks. Please let us know how it turns out. :)

So after downloading and installing "3", and not being able to import my current data I went back and reread the instructions provided above. Since I've been using "5" it appears that I can't use the data from my vaults after the downgrade to 3.

"As of 1Password 4 your vaults have been locally stored in an sqlite database file which you won't be able to import into 1Password 3. If we can be of any help please let us know."

Is my understanding correct? Because I went from 5 to 3 I have to start from scratch?

    Hi @Otis‌

You've misunderstood that part (or I didn't write it clearly enough). You can't directly import a backup or the vault from 1Password 4/5 as it is stored in a newer format that 1Password 3 doesn't understand.

That being said, the .agilekeychain format is still used for syncing in Dropbox and if you set up Folder Sync. That happens to be the format 1Password 3 understands.

So if in 1Password 4/5 you enter the preferences and change to the Sync tab you can set up Folder Sync (for example). Pick a location like your Desktop. If you let 1Password sync and then close down 1Password 4/5 the 1Password.agilekeychain on your Desktop should be a faithful copy of your vault. If you use that .agilekeychain in 1Password 3 you should be fine.

If you're finding that isn't the case do please let us know where the issue arises. The better the description you can supply the better the chances we can determine what is going wrong.

It is definitely possible though as this is how I populate 1Password 3 with test data when I need to do something.
