Setting Up 1password Vault to be Shared at Work
I will be setting up a new vault that will be shared by a number of people here at work (I already have my own vault and have been using 1password for years). But this will be new to everyone else. So, I have a question
I understand how to set up a new vault but I'm wondering about the best way to sync. I believe the use of Dropbox is discouraged at my organization for possible security issues (no need to counter –it's a Sisyphean task to convince our IT department of anything). So, that being said, it would be great to be able to sync via a network drive. These network drives are maintained well and the uptime is quite high. So, I'm not worried about not having access to it when we need it). Question: our office uses a mix of Macs and PCs. If we put the keychain on a network drive, can I maintain my personal vault on Dropbox? And, are there any specific issues about setting it up on a network drive I should be aware of (I've read the manual for Macs, which I have --is the procedure any different for PCs?)

Thanks for taking the time to write in about 1Password!

You can sync 1Password to a network drive using Folder Sync, but we strongly recommend that you store the folder locally and use a sync solution to sync the data with the network drive. 1Password will expect this folder to be available always, and if it is not, you will run into error messages.

Each vault has separate sync settings, so you can sync your personal vault on Dropbox and use Folder Sync for your shared office vault.

As I mentioned above, we do advise using a sync solution instead of storing the keychain directly on the network drive.
PCs do handle multiple vaults differently. Instead of all vaults being unlocked using the Master Password of the primary vault, PC users will go to File > Open Datafile to open a separate vault (keychain).
I hope this helps, but we're here if you have any further questions or concerns!

Thanks. I do have another question. So, if you are recommending that we store the file locally, does EVERYONE who is sharing the vault store the file locally or just one person? How does that work when you are using 1password in a shared environment and also with those using PCs and Macs?

Hi @outtacontext,
For a scenario like this, we would recommend that everyone store the file locally then use a sync solution to get that synced over to the network drive. It'll provide better reliability than going directly to the network drive. You'll need some little sync app running on each device to keep the local copies synced with the network drive copy. Many of these exist out there... cause I'm a unix nerd I'd reach over for rsync, but I'm sure there's better and friendlier options available out there. Once that's setup it's just a matter of connecting each device's 1Password app to the local AgileKeychain.
Hope this clears things up.
Rick
