Password incorrect on my Mac

So I have 1Password on my iPhone and iPad. My master password works on both, however, when changed on the phone and pad it no longer worked on my mac. So I deleted the app and thought I'd reinstall and it would ask for the new master password that works on my phone and pad, but no it still jiggles and gives me a red error message. How can I use the app on my mac if the master password works on my phone and pad, but not my mac?

Thank you because I love this app!

Carl

Please tell us how you sync your devices. There are certain scenarios when a master password change does not currently sync from one device to another. The work around is to change the master password manually on both devices. If you tell us how you sync someone will be able to tell you whether that bug is the cause of your problem.

Thank you Stephen - I sync via the cloud.

  • Hi @carlbobb‌,

Presently, Master Passwords do not automatically sync using iCloud. This has been added and will ship as part of 1Password for Mac 5.1 and 1Password for iOS 5.2. On the Mac you should still be able to use the old Master Password to unlock the data. It's OK for different devices to have different Master Passwords, and you could choose to then manually update the Master Password on the Mac.

    I hope this helps.

Thanks Rick, but the problem is I don't remember the old password. So I'm stuck with a copy of 1 Password on my Mac that I cannot open. On my phone and pad I can open the app, but not on my Mac. Can I delete the app and the old backup and completely reinstall?

    Hi @carlbobb‌

You haven't mentioned what versions you're running on your various devices but as you mention iCloud Sync I'm assuming you're running 1Password 5 on both of your iOS devices and your Mac. Everything below is based on this assumption.

Here's what I'd like you to do. I'd like you to follow the Starting Over guide. Each step is important, if you don't ensure 1Password mini is terminated it can result in funky behaviour and if you don't reboot when requested to can, again, result in funky behaviour. Also, please do note that in step 2 we talk about moving the folders and files rather than simply deleting them (so worst case scenario you still have access to them).

You'll notice that in step 2 the instructions differ depending on which version of 1Password you've been running, MAS or Web Store. Again, assuming you're running 1Password 5 with iCloud Sync that would mean the MAS version. What I'd say is check the instructions for both versions, just as a precaution and make sure the files in both places aren't there to interfere later.

Once you've rebooted and you've launched 1Password it should pick up the iCloud sync data straight away and ask you for the Master Password. Now because this time 1Password isn't burdened with knowledge of the older Master Password it will be asking for your current one, the one you say still allows access to your vault on both of your iOS devices.

Please do let us know how you get along. If you have any questions or concerns do please post. If you're not running 1Password 5 on all of your devices do please post back here too. Fingers crossed though we may be hearing you're successfully running 1Password 5 on all your devices once again
