Do Multiple Vaults use the same Key Chain?

I am using 1Password 4 (still on Mavericks) both on a Mac mini and an 11" 2014 MacBook Air. I sync via Dropbox.

In prep for setting up my wife to access some shared passwords on her iPhone, I have added a couple new vaults (my first time using additional vaults) on the MBA. The additional vaults are not yet syncing to the Mac mini, and I see in Preferences that I need to set up syncing for the new vaults separately from my primary vault.

I want to do this via Dropbox, and when I selected to do that in my 1Password.agilekeychain, I got a notice that the information there was going to be merged.

Question: Should each vault in 1Password have it's own keychain? Or does a single keychain contain multiple vaults?

Say I want to have 3 vaults, and have one of those shared with my wife - what's the simplest way to accomplish that?

TIA!

You will actually have 3 separate keychains. Each Vault has its own keychain. When you start syncing point that sync setup at a empty folder inside Dropbox. If you point it at a folder that contains a keychain you will get the merge prompt which we do not want. Once you enable syncing 1Password will create the vault keychain in that specified folder.

Its best to get started by creating a separate folder in Dropbox for each keychain. It keeps things nice and tidy. Prevents you from getting that merge prompt.

Hi @benjwa‌ Let us know if you have any more questions after reading thightower's response.

Please note that if you and your wife have separate Dropbox accounts then you will need to share the folder that contains the secondary vault in question. Here's a link to our Sharing a vault page that might prove informative. It also lets you know how to add a secondary vault to another Mac as that bit catches a few people out. The trick is you don't add the vault via 1Password but merely double click on the correct agilekeychain. 1Password will then ask if you want to add it as a secondary vault.

Let us know how you get along.
