Password Generator not capturing passwords
I've been having a problem with using the Password Generator extension on Mac/Chrome. It turns out that the Generator inserts the password into the web form, but hasn't been capturing it in 1Password. As a result, I often copy the password to the clipboard, and then paste it into 1Password; unfortunately, I occasionally forget to do so.
A couple of questions:
-- is there a way to make copy to clipboard the default for generating a password?
-- is there somewhere that generated passwords are stored, so that I can go back and find one I've created? I seem to recall that there used to be a "history" section, but don't see it any longer.
Finally, any idea why I'm having this problem? Why isn't the generated password updating the 1Password file?
Many thanks,
- Frank

I'm assuming you're using 1P4 or 1P5.
is there a way to make copy to clipboard the default for generating a password?
Open 1P mini (⌥⌘\), go to Password Generator, click on the drop down where it says Fill and ensure Copy to Clipboard Before Filling is ticked.
is there somewhere that generated passwords are stored, so that I can go back and find one I've created?
Any generated password not linked to a specific saved login item should be saved in your Passwords category.
Why isn't the generated password updating the 1Password file?
I'm sorry I don't know the answer to that.

Hi Frank ( @fhb2031 ),
I'm sorry to hear that you've been having trouble with the password generator in 1Password! Stephen_C's given you a great answer here already, but I just wanted to chime in on your last question:
Why isn't the generated password updating the 1Password file?
Once you complete the password change process on the website, 1Password should pop up and offer to update your existing Login with the new information. There are some cases where 1Password might not notice that you are on a password change page and won't prompt you to update your Login. For cases like that, we have the two safety nets that Stephen_C mentioned above:
- When 'Copy to Clipboard Before Filling' is selected, each generated password will be copied to the clipboard once you click that 'Fill' button. Then if 1Password doesn't prompt you to update your Login, you can open the item in 1Password and paste the new password into the appropriate field.
- Whenever you click 'Fill' for a generated password, 1Password will create a new item in the 'Passwords' category with this generated password, and the URL of the website you're viewing.
I hope this helps, but we're here if you have any further questions or concerns!

I just managed to lock myself out of a newly created e-banking account because of the password generator…
Basically 1password didn't detect the password fields when I clicked on the "Fill" button, so I manually copy-pasted the generated password, assuming I'd see the prompt to save it after submitting the form. That didn't happen and since I'd already copy-pasted another piece of information when filling in the form, there was no way of recovering it.
Hence my question. Why is the password generator generating passwords so eagerly? Couldn't you add a button to explicitly generate new passwords and store the suggested password as long as the vault is open?

Hi @RaphaelSaunier,
I'm sorry you're having some difficulty with the password generator. Have you read the earlier posts from Stephen and Megan? As Megan explained:
- Whenever you click 'Fill' for a generated password, 1Password will create a new item in the 'Passwords' category with this generated password, and the URL of the website you're viewing.
So as long as you click the Fill button in the password generator, if 1Password doesn't prompt you to update your Login item with that new password, you'll be able to find it in the Passwords category. Simply open the main 1Password app, then select the Passwords category in the left sidebar. You can find the new password you generated, then copy & paste it into the password field of your existing Login item for that site.
I hope this helps to clear up the confusion, but please let us know if you need more help with that. :)

It is worth pointing out that the password list can be sorted by password age. One of the reasons for failure to record may be that the password was not properly identified with a site.

You certain can list by password age @waldhaus1 although I'm not sure it would help in these situations.
In the case of @fhb2031 I would hope the Password item is stored in 1Password and they just haven't realised yet. In the case of @RaphaelSaunier they may (or may not) have been caught out with a bug where copying the password using OS X's clipboard doesn't generate a Password item in contrast to using the buttons. I say may not as I don't know
As long as you use the button to Fill or Copy it will create a Password item you can fall back on but we do have a ticket for using OS X's clipboard too.
