Suggestion: Lock when lid closed on Macbook

If it's possible I would like an option for 1Password to lock when my Macbook lid closes. I currently have it lock on sleep, but this means I am unlocking vaults a lot as I have my Macbook sleep when it can. If I could have it only lock when the lid is closed that would be great because if my Macbook were stolen it would most likely be closed and then 1P would lock up. But, I wouldn't have to unlock it when just waking from sleep.

I've added a request but given it would only apply to MacBooks and of those the target audience may not be large... I have passed the request on though

I imagine there are a lot of 1Password for Mac users using MacBooks... so I hope they consider it, if it's technically possible.

I don't use a MacBook, but is closing the cover different from sleeping on a desktop machine? I suppose not, or you could set the option to lock on sleep.

When you close the lid the Macbook goes to sleep, so you can use the sleep option and I do. Here is how my idea is different though: I also like my Macbook to sleep after a certain amount of idle time, as I tend to have my Macbook on my desk and sit down at it periodically throughout the day with long periods of non-use. So, each time I sit down it wakes the machine up and when I go to use 1P it is locked. I end up entering my 1P password about 10 times each day it seems. So, it dawned on me that if it could only lock 1P when the lid is closed then it would provide a level of security that is higher than not having it lock on sleep, but lower than locking every time it sleeps. I think for myself and many others it would be a nice option to have. Since there are already 5 different options for Auto-lock in the 1P preferences, I can't see what harm adding a sixth one specific for laptop users would be. That is, assuming the OS gives some sort of hook into the hardware state (lid closed or not) for developers to access.

    Hi @fmo‌

I can imagine a great number of our users are MacBook owners but my initial hesitation was the inclusion of a setting specific to just one set of hardware and after that how many people would find such a feature useful (you may be in a very small group of people that would use such a setting).

I couldn't find anything very informative when I looked but there must be some sort of event fired at some level. As you say, the question will be is it exposed by Apple's frameworks or not.

I have an iMac and a MacBook. "Lock on close" would be nice but it's not a biggie as far as I'm concerned. Let us not forget the inactivity timer. I have it set for ten minutes on my iMac but only five minutes on my MacBook. It probably locks before I close the cover!

For myself I only want 1P to lock if the laptop is being moved, I am not concerned about locking while at my desk, as I have the screen lock when it goes to screen saver and that is enough protection. So, inactivity timers are not want I want. I could see the preference only showing up in the Preferences interface if the computer was a Macbook, so it would not confuse iMac users.

For context, I have used 1Password since version 1 when it was 1Passwd, so my suggestion comes from many years of daily use of the app. With all that time it is an option I have found myself wanting.

  • Thanks for the additional feedback and explanation of your use case, @fmo. :)
