1Password 4 unlimited trial?
Hi, Agilebits!
I've been waiting for my 1Password 4.4.3 trial to end, to pay you guys for this software that I use every day. Today I realized it's probably been way over 30 days, so I started poking around.
The "License" dialog box says my trial has ended, and that I need to buy a license to unlock all the features. But it doesn't say what those features might be, and when I'm playing around in the app, all the things that others have suggested (store more than 30 log-ins, edit existing log-ins, add new log-ins, etc.) are still available to me.
I found a screenshot that shows a "Trial Expired" button in the corner of the window, but mine doesn't say that. (Then again, the screenshot looks like 1Password 5, so maybe that's a new addition.)
Is 1Password 4 free indefinitely because it's an old version? Is the difference between the trial and full versions something so subtle I just haven't found it yet? Is this a bug that's preventing people from paying you? :-)
cheers,

My understanding is that there was a bug in some versions of 1Password 4 that resulted in not actually requiring a license to continue to use its features. I assume this is the reason you still have access to everything. When there trial period ends, you still have access to all your data, but you can't add new entries or edit your existing ones.
The messages you are seeing should disappear if you purchase a license. As of today, the license is for version 5, which is a free upgrade for registered version 4 users. It will insist that you license your copy before allowing you full use.
You can buy a license from Apple or from the AgileBits web store. It will take some trickery to get version 4 from Aplle, I believe, but I don't recall what you need to do. If you want iCloud syncing, though, you must use the version from the Mac App Store. The version sold directly by Agileabits has been closed off from using iCloud. Dropbox syncing is available on either version.

Hi @ken_,
Thanks for asking us about that! Normally, after the 30 day trial expires, you wouldn't be able to add more than 20 total items to 1Password. However, there was a bug in 1Password 4 for Mac where, in certain cases, an unregistered/trial copy would not actually expire. If it's been more than 30 days since you started using 1Password on your Mac, it sounds like that's what is happening.
But you can still purchase a license from our web store. You'll technically be purchasing a license for 1Password 5, but the same license file also works for 1Password 4.
Sorry for the confusion about that! If you have more questions, just let us know. :)

It's slightly worrying that there's such a bug in a password manager. But then again, the very generous trial period (30 days, full functionality?) is one of the reasons I'm using 1Password today, and will probably buy it even though there might not be any technical need to. So thanks for that!
Another program (not a password manager) that I tried recently had a trial mode that was much more restrictive, and was buggy in the other direction: I could never get it to work at all. Needless to say, despite looking very impressive on their webpage, I have no plans to ever purchase that program.

Hi @ken_,
That's great to hear. Another way to look at the bug... is that we consciously decided to fix other bugs or work on other features. We knew about it, and decided we could live it. We did fix it up for version 5 though.
Cheers.
Rick
