How long until 1Password sale, introduction of v6 & a couple of other questions

Hi guys. I've owned 1Password on iOS for a while & would like to purchase 1Password for Mac.
1. This is a bit of a cheeky question but is there likely to be a 1Password sale anytime soon? 1Password for Mac is pretty expensive.
2. Also, is 1Password v6 due to be released anytime soon? I'd hate to purchase v5 only to have to pay again for an upgrade reasonably soon.
3. Finally, I'm not sure about which version to purchase: Mac App Store or the web store version. I'd like to have the simplicity of iCloud but the inflexibility of MAS is a concern. Does anyone have any particular thoughts either way?

Cheers
Gary

If you want iCloud syncing, you must buy from the MAS. Apple closed off using iCloud syncing for applications that they don't sell from their own store.

Since I don't work for AgileBits, I couldn't answer your questions about upcoming sales or future releases if I wanted to, but I've been hanging around long enough to know the they won't release information about future plans like those. There have been reasonably frequent sales, but not on a predictable schedule that I can discern.

Also Dropbox syncing is available in both versions, and many people prefer it to iCloud.

  • Hi @Maddcow,

Thanks for writing in. I'll try to address your questions point by point.

    1. Sorry... I left my crystal ball in my other set of pants. (I also don't know of any upcoming sale, but we don't usually pre-announce those, as you can imagine. )
    2. 1Password 6 isn't shipping soon. Your definition of soon and my definition of soon may not match though. We don't talk much about our upcoming roadmaps, mostly so that we can decide to change things and not have to break promises. Even if it was shipping soon, that wouldn't necessarily mean you'd have to pay for it again. 4 to 5 was a free upgrade.
    3. iCloud Sync is quite nice. It's limited to only syncing 1 vault though, which for some people is a deal-breaker. Both support dropbox and Wi-Fi (which is getting secondary vault syncing in 5.1). If you purchase via the Mac App Store, you can switch to the website version later, and your MAS license will automatically be converted to a Webstore license, so the inflexibility of MAS shouldn't be much of a concern there. We've given you an out if/when you need it.

    I hope this helps.

    Hi @Maddcow‌

I hope you found hawkmoth's response useful. To see if a sale starts I would recommend either tracking us on twitter or Facebook where we will announce them but we don't tend to give advance warning.

We also don't announce future release dates - sorry. All future minor updates to 1Password 5 will be free to anybody that has purchased 1Password 4 or 5. Now we reserve the right to charge for major updates e.g. 1Password 6 but it doesn't mean we will, just that it's a possibility.

Here's one advantage if you purchase 1Password 5 from our Store. As we have a lot more control over the store we can offer our previous customers a discount when they decide to upgrade. Sadly Apple don't have a similar option so to get anywhere near our upgrade price you'd have to wait for a sale. Who knows, maybe Apple will create such an option in the future but at this point in time it isn't. So if we were to release 1Password 6 as a paid upgrade tomorrow (which we aren't) then MAS users would need to pay full price unlike our Agile Web Store users who would more than likely get an upgrade price.

Obviously many things can change but we've always tried to be kind to our customers.

If you have any further questions please do ask.
