Delete passwords that aren't associated with logins? [Resolved]

There are a few passwords in my 'All items' list that are part of logins that I've deleted. Is there a way to delete them all at once without having to do it individually? Like a menu item that deletes all passwords that aren't part of a login?

I'm slightly puzzled by what you say so maybe the first thing we should know is what version of 1P you are running.

There are a few passwords in my 'All items' list that are part of logins that I've deleted.

Do you mean, for example, that they still appear in the Passwords category? That stores passwords generated in 1P which 1P does not detect as linked to a specific saved login. You can clear an redundant generated passwords from that category by going to 1P > Help> Tools> Remove Redundant Generated Passwords. (That is on the assumption you're using 1P4 or 1P5.) Does that help?

    Hi @Mr. Laser Beam,

If you're referring to items in the Passwords category (as Stephen suggested), and if the Remove Redundant Generated Passwords option doesn't remove all the ones you don't need, you can delete them yourself. If you have more questions about that (or if you're not asking about Password items), please let us know! :)

Removing redundant passwords didn't do the job; neither did optimizing the database. I suppose I can delete these orphans myself but I was just wondering if I could do it all at once.

@Stephen: I'm using the app store version, 5.0.2, for OS X

You can do it all at once if they are all in the Password category. Highlight the first one, type CMD A to select all, and press the delete key or drag everything to the 1Passwoed trash. Empty the trash.

^ actually I meant choose a menu item that would do it automatically, but thanks for the tip anyway. :)

(I don't know what 'redundant passwords' are - I assumed they were passwords that weren't actually in a login, meaning they were from logins I had saved but have since deleted. But when 1P showed me which ones were redundant, none of them were actually passwords like that.)

@Mr. Laser Beam - To the best of my understanding, "redundant passwords" is actually called "Duplicate Passwords" in the security audit section of the side panel. That is just another way of discovering which records have the same password. If the passwords that were saved to the Password category aren't any longer in the records for the category where they are actually used, they won't be duplicated anymore.

    Hi @Mr. Laser Beam,

Redundant passwords are actually a specific subset of duplicate passwords. The 'Duplicate passwords' category in 1Password's security audit shows you all cases of repeated passwords in your database. Since password re-use is a big no-no, this quickly shows you the sites where you want to update your passwords to something unique. 'Redundant passwords' are passwords that have been generated by 1Password that are also stored as a Login item.

I hope this helps to explain things, if you have any further questions or concerns, we're here to help!

Would it be safe if I simply deleted everything in the 'Passwords' category? This wouldn't affect my actual logins, would it?

I already know that every password I have is unique, and I have no interest in keeping previously used passwords (within any login) or old passwords that I don't use anymore.

    Hi @Mr. Laser Beam

Password items are no different in that sense from any other type, deleting them won't affect anything else in your vault. You can safely create or delete them without any interference to anything else. As long as you're confident that the passwords only represent obsolete data you're good to go

I just did that very thing, and thankfully my logins were unaffected. Thanks for the advice. :)
