Manual sync 1Password 5.1.1 on Mac

I use 1Password 5.1.1 on my Mac with 10.10.2 installed and I also use it on my iPhone 6 Plus and iPad Mini 2. On my iPhone and iPad there is an option to sync now, but on the Mac there is not. The only way I can see to force a sync on the Mac is to make a change on the Mac. But if I make a change in 1Password on my iPhone I would like the option to do a sync now on my Mac. Is there a way to do this and if not, can you add the sync now option on the Mac version just like you have it on the iOS version?

    Hi @corey_balko,

Are you using Dropbox sync, or another sync option? With Dropbox sync, 1Password for Mac simply writes data to the local Dropbox folder on your Mac, and the Dropbox app is in charge of syncing of your 1Password data to/from the Dropbox servers. Because 1Password for Mac doesn't actually do the syncing, it doesn't have a Sync Now button.

On the other hand, 1Password for iOS actually performs the sync by using the Dropbox API, so it makes sense for the iOS app to have a Sync Now button (although it usually syncs automatically without you needing to do anything).

So really, you shouldn't normally need to tap a Sync Now button at all. When you make a change to 1Password on your iPhone, that should quickly sync to the Dropbox servers, and the Dropbox app should automatically copy the changes to the Dropbox folder on your Mac. 1Password for Mac monitors the file system for changes, so when a change is made to the 1Password data in the Dropbox folder, the 1Password app is notified and copies that change to your vault.

I hope that helps to explain the difference and why the Sync Now button is only in the iOS app! If you have more questions or I misunderstood something, please let us know.

That explains a lot. I have been using Dropbox for years until yesterday when I decided to try iCloud syncing. Is the behavior the same? Do you have a preference of one over the other? I am happy to switch back to Dropbox if you think it is better than iCloud syncing.

  • Hi @corey_balko,

iCloud sync changed between Mavericks & iOS 7 and Yosemite & iOS 8. In 1Password 5 for iOS and Mac built for Yosemite and iOS 8, we're using Apple's CloudKit sync service that powers the iCloud sync. We use their APIs to manage the data directly, so it should be automatic instant changes most of the time.

Neither sync service is better than the other, they both have Pros and Cons.

If you make a change on the iPhone, does the iPad pick up the change right away?

It is possible you might be seeing a bug in the Mac app where it did get the changes but it didn't update the interface. Can you create a new item (rather than editing an existing item) in the iOS app and see if that does in fact update the interface on the Mac? If nothing happens, lock the Mac app and unlock it, does it then show you the new data?
