    Hi

I am running 1Password 4 with Mavericks and am planning on upgrading to Yosemite in the next few days, I understand that you need 1Password version 5, however Stephen-C above has mentioned that "Just be aware that if you want to use iCloud to sync you must get the Mac App Store version". I want to use iCloud to sync but have bought 1Password 4 from the company site. When I go to the App Store it would appear it wants to charge me $64.99 again, how do I upgrade/download 1Password 5 AND be able to use iCloud..?

    Thank you

  • Hi @lilpill,

1Password 5 for Mac is a major release and one of the significant changes we made was a complete rewrite of iCloud syncing. 1Password 5 switched to the new Apple iCloud "CloudKit" technology which is only available on OS X Yosemite and iOS 8, and limited to Mac App Store apps only. After this change we were no longer able to offer iCloud syncing in the web store version of 1Password.

We've put together a FAQ page with more information here:

    Web store and iCloud FAQ

I also want to make sure that you have a chance to review some more information on iCloud and why the Mac App Store is the only version that has access to that particular sync option. Roustem, one of our founders, has written a blog post on the iCloud rewrite and I’d like to share it with you:

About iCloud changes in 1Password 5

The only way to use iCloud in 1Password 5 is to purchase directly from the Mac App Store. Unfortunately, there is no way for us to transfer your purchase from our store to Apple's. I’m very sorry we don’t have a better migration path for you.

This is nuts. Your marketing page says your all about keeping things safe and secure and EASY. I'm not an old man with a VCR clock flashing 12:00. Keeping up with which versions on my multiple devices and computers, can sync is nuts. I have a new iMac and I want to put on version 5 as well as on my day old replacement iPhone. I'm confused as heck about what to do. So I have to read for an hour to decide.

@Chulio - I can't tell if you are seeking advice or not, or whether you are a current user or not. But if you have a new iMc and a new iPhone, the choices are pretty simple.

For the iPhone, download 1Password from the iTunes App Store for free. You can use it in its basic form as long as you like, but if you want or need the more advanced Pro features, they require an in-app purchase to activate. There is a 30% off sale going on as I write this.

For the iMac, if you want to use iCloud for syncing, buy a license from the Mac App Store. It's also on sale for 30% off at the moment. If iCloud isn't that import to you, you then could choose to buy a license from the AgileBits web store. It's on sale for 30% off.

This is a major issue, don't let the 1PW fanboys here tell you otherwise. As a longterm 1Password user I was appalled by the way they've treated their direct customers with the introduction of this "much more stable, much better sync" and at the same time withdrawn it from those who purchased from their own web store. If you want an indication of how a company will treat you in the long term remember this - would you trust them with your most sensitive data? How long before they drop you in the poo and make you buy the whole thing again? Now they explain it away as Apple's fault and their previous solution was a messy one and never going to be sustainable - well they never said that at the time! Shocking!

@charlieandphelps - Perhaps it would help if you explained what you think AgileBits should have done in the face of an Apple decision over which they had no control? When Apple provides them with no option to transfer licenses from their store to Apple's?

In fact Agile repeatedly said that iCloud sync was not guaranteed to work on later versions of 1PW, that Apple could remove the possibility at ny time (which happened). However, most of this was said in the forums. I don't know if it was said anywhere on the purchase page - but I note that even though the current purchase page very clearly states that if you want iCloud sync you have to buy from the App Store, many people miss this info.

And you will NEVER be forced to buy the whole thing again. Like all programs, the current 1PW may not work with a new OS, but it's your choice whether to upgrade the OS.

Hey folks! I just wanted to chime in here and apologize for any confusion or misunderstanding when it comes to sync'ing between various versions of 1Password.

@Chulio: I can definitely understand where you're coming from, as this is a sore spot for me as well. As not only a 1Password customer and advocate, but also an AgileBits employee. We want to be clear about the capabilities of our products, but -- even more importantly -- we want them to be simple and a pleasure to use in the first place! In a perfect world there would be one sync solution that fit everyone's needs, but unless that happens we have to do the best with the options available to us. And we need to make it as clear as possible which options are available to our customers. Where we have failed in that regard, I am sorry. We are in the process of making our documentation and knowledgebase both more thorough and more accessible -- and therefore more awesome. Please check it out. We welcome the feedback!

@charlieandphelps: Now, I won't make any promises since I'm not the one doing the work behind the scenes at AgileBits (or setting policy at Apple), but know that if Apple were to allow non-MAS apps to sync using iCloud we would be very interested. But the reality is that it probably doesn't make any business sense for them to change this going forward, so we're not holding our breath. The MAS isn't for everyone necessarily, but it has a lot of benefits for both Apple and their customers, so they incentivize developers to use it as a platform to sell their software. iCloud is the carrot on the stick. :p

Obviously, we cannot offer refunds on MAS purchases since it is Apple's store, but we will do what we can to make things right nonetheless. I know in this case the opposite is true: you're purchasing from AgileBits directly. And while it may not be in our power to add iCloud Sync to the non-MAS version of 1Password, if you are not happy with your purchase, we can and do offer a 30-day money back guarantee.

Again, while some things are just outside of our control, we will always do what we can to help you and the rest of our awesome customers get the most out of our software and make things right when you run into trouble. When in doubt, reach out! :chuffed:
