Several 1Password 4 (web version) questions before upgrading from 3

I'm chary of installing 1P4 for testing because I encountered conflicts between it and 1P3 the last time I tried it that resulted in the loss of the whole vault (mercifully restored from backup).

1) Is the v5 license backwards-compatible with v4? I'm assuming I'll have to purchase a v5 license when I upgrade.

2) Is v4 compatible with v3.7.2 on iOS 8? Of specific concern is wi-fi syncing via an ad-hoc connection.

3) Are the following things fixed in v4 (all of these are current problems in 3.8.21):
a) The Password field is easily truncated in Login items, and thereby obscured, by the encroachment of the "Generate" button and the "Drop an image here to customize" placeholder when the window is reduced in width even a small amount.
b) The "Display" and "Submit" drop-down menus are only displayed when a Login item is being edited.
c) It's not possible to tab from the Field Name field to the Field Value field when creating a new, custom field for a Login item.
d) It's not possible to edit multiple items at once (eg. to add the same date and purchase price to software licenses purchased in a bundle). This one's a real pain, actually.
e) Lack of British English localisation, eg. "Toll free" rather than "Freephone"; "Checking" rather than "Current" as an account type; "Social Security Number" rather than "National Insurance Number"; etc.
f) No VISA Debit or Debit Mastercard option for Wallet items

I recognise that for point (e), there's only so much that can be done. On the other hand, it grates when paying for a product that doesn't reflect the user's locale accurately, and Apple does offer a robust localisation framework in OS X and iOS for this purpose.

I realise that 1P4 offers many new features, but given 1P3 is currently largely satisfactory for my needs (apart from the points raised above), they don't represent as much of a selling point as would fixes for the existing flaws.

    Hi @SurfnTurf,

    1. The 1Password 5 licence is backwards compatible with 1Password 4. It can be used with either version and a 1Password 3 licence will enable you to obtain an upgrade price for 1Password 5 just like it did with 1Password 4. If you've only been a 1Password 3 customer in the past then yes, you would be required to purchase a new licence as the move to 1Password 4 was a paid upgrade (1Password 5 is actually a free update for any 1Password 4 customer though).
    2. Wi-Fi Syncing in 1Password 4/5 is not compatible with 1Password for iPhone (AKA v3 for iOS). Wi-Fi Syncing changed a lot in 1Password 4. It means the only way to sync 1Password for iPhone is with 1Password 3 for Mac using Wi-Fi. Now if you're running iOS 8 then you have a compatible device for running 1Password 5 for iOS. The basic version is free but if any of the Pro Features interest you then you'd need to make the in-app purchase.

    For Q3.

    A. The new Password Generator icon moves as the password field grows. It will have a limit based on your screen size but it tries.
    B. This is still the case, they're only visible when editing.
    C. Tab works fine in 1Password 5 for moving between custom field titles and custom fields.
    D. Sorry, it's still one item at a time. All I can think of for this one is to create a basic Login item containing all the common parts and copy that multiple times. You'd still need to go in and edit to add all the software specific parts so maybe not much help depending on your view.
    E. Not just yet but we're working on it. @Stephen_C, an amazing user and moderator here put a lot of work into helping with the British localisation.
    F. Still the standard options at the moment. I'm from the UK so I know what you mean.

    Hi @littlebobbytables,

    1) Ok, that's one less thing to worry about :)

    2) Hmm, shame, but understandable. This means I have to factor in a further $10 to the cost of upgrading, as I would require the Pro features.

    3)
    a) & c): As c) refers to your usage in 1P5, I have to assume it applies to a) too. Unfortunately, as I said, I can only consider 1P4, as I have no intention of upgrading to 10.10 in the foreseeable future.
    b) This is a shame, as the way I use 1P means I make frequent use of the Display field in particular.
    d) This really is a shame. Your suggested workaround is what I do now, but it removes very little of the repetition & tedium from the process of adding bundle licenses. Maybe in 1P6, which I could upgrade to should I get OS X 10.11…
    e) & f) Also very much a shame. Could you possibly tell me: when is the localisation proposed to be complete; will it be applicable to 1P4; and will it (can it?) affect such things as changing, "Checking" to "Current" (and, in fact, should it? What if I happen to have both types of account)?

So, at best I can hope for a) & c) to be fixed in 1P4.

Thanks for responding, I guess I'll have to mull it over. :|

    Hi @SurfnTurf,

Apologies, I did miss where you wrote "are these fixed in v4".

I've double checked and a) and c) apply to version 4 as well as version 5. With points e) and f) if/when they changed I'm afraid it would very likely only be in version 5. Maintaining multiple versions can end up being a very intensive task, much more than you might guess (like myself). So sadly 1Password 4 is no longer under active development but is available for anybody not wishing (or unable) to upgrade to the lovely Yosemite. I don't know what requirements 1Password 6 will have when it comes out, it may run equally well on 10.10 as 1Password 5 does.

If you have any further questions do please ask!

I've decided to pass on 1P4 & 5. Now that Apple's announced an optimisation focus for 10.11 it's likely I'll update when that's released (well, 10.11.1), so I'll re-visit 1P then. Frankly, though, unless (d), (e) and (f) are sorted I might pass then too.

    Thanks for the replies.
