I am confused on what version of 1password I should buy, and whether or not I need to purchase an additional product from the apple store.
I want to be able to use 1password for my Mac, iPad and iPhone. I also use windows on my Mac with Bootcamp. I never seem to have need to use iCloud.
Can i buy 1password for Mac for this use? Do i also need to buy IOS from the Apple store? If not how do i add 1password to my iPhone and iPad?
I hope that was clear.
thanks

    Hi @safety1,

Thanks so much for considering 1Password to keep your data secure and organized! Since iCloud is not important to you, I'd recommend purchasing directly from our website. You can pick up a Mac+Windows bundle so that you can use 1Password on both your Mac and your Windows partition.

For your iPhone and iPad, 1Password 5 for iOS is a free download from the iOS App Store. There are premium features available for a one-time in-app purchase, but the free version will be plenty to get you started and get you up to speed.

We have a great collection of User Guides and Knowledgebase articles that can walk you through the set-up process, and our team here would be more than happy to help you if you hit any snags in the process! :)

Please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns.

Thank you for the clarity. I would have no problem spending the extra to get the pro IOS. Can you tell me if my wife and I can share certain online purchasing account passwords, can i pick and choose which accounts I want to share with her MBP? For example i would want to share our Amazon account, but not my brokerage account, nor my email accounts. we also have separate bank accounts.
She also has an iPad and iPhone but a different apple ID can we just buy a 2 1password 5 for IOS?
    Thanks

    Hi @safety1,

Can you tell me if my wife and I can share certain online purchasing account passwords, can i pick and choose which accounts I want to share with her MBP?

You certainly can! 1Password 5 has a brilliant Multiple Vaults feature that will let you keep all your shared items in a secondary vault. That can be shared between you, while keeping your own personal data safe and secure.

She also has an iPad and iPhone but a different apple ID can we just buy a 2 1password 5 for IOS?

With different Apple IDs, she would need to purchase the Pro features separately. We had hoped to support Apple's new Family Sharing policy, but they determined that In-App Purchases do not qualify.

    I hope this helps!

would i setup all the accounts one time on my Mac, or will i need to setup the accounts on both Mac and iPhone, iPad separately?

  • Hi @safety1,

There are no accounts with 1Password as it is not a subscription service. You just buy 1Password once and share the same license file with up to 6 family members in the household (for desktops). Each 1Password copy you install on different computers and mobile devices can be set up to use its own data file or you can enable the sync to reuse the same data file on different devices.

If you and your wife want to use separate data files, you can do that. When you decide to share certain items, you can create a separate vault to store these shared items in and then sync/share that vault with your wife and she can open that vault in her 1Password database.

To make this easier to get started, I'd suggest setting it up first on your Mac, enable the primary vault to sync with Dropbox with this guide: https://guides.agilebits.com/1password-mac/5/en/topic/sync-dropbox

After Dropbox finishes its sync, you can then install 1Password on your iOS devices, open it and tell 1Password to sync an existing vault. You can then choose Dropbox to sync and select that vault that you created on the Mac.

You should be all set by then.

Let us know if you need further assistance.

If you decide to use Dropbox, you must buy your Mac license from the Mac App Store. But you will never be able to use iCloud to sync with the Windows version, unless Apple relents and opens syncing services to products that they don't sell. Youll still need a Windows license, though.

So i want to buy the bundle to use for both Mac and Windows. I do not believe I will need to sync the windows portion. The only thing I use windows for is Quicken 2015, as the Mac versions are not up to speed. So in this case i would like to sync with iCloud.

Then you must buy your license from Apple at the Mac App Store. If you send your receipt to support+licenses@agilebits.com and tell them you are interested in a Windows license, they will arrange for a discount that will may your total outlay equal the bundle pricing.

As I think about your needs, though, I wonder why you even want a Windows license if you don't plan to keep it synchronized with the other platforms.

Not sure I understand why I need to buy from Mac App store. Can't I buy the bundle and from the website and sync with iCloud?
As for the windows platform, If I change all my passwords to something complicated (1P generated) I will not be able to download all my financial information into quicken, as it would be very cumbersome to get those passwords typed in every time. I have left questions in the 1P for Mac forum as to the best way to manage the passwords in quicken. I thought I could use 1P windows version and copy the passwords into the quicken vault.

    Hi @safety1,

The reason why you would need to purchase 1Password for Mac from Apple's Mac App Store (MAS) is due to restrictions in place by Apple. iCloud sync uses something called the CloudKit framework. It's part of the whole new iCloud when it got revised late last year along with the release of Yosemite and iOS 8. Now, only applications purchased via one of Apple's stores can access these frameworks. This has no impact on our 1Password for iOS because it was only ever sold via iTunes but it did impact on the Mac version which is available in both our Web Store and MAS. The Web Store version is effectively locked out of iCloud unless there is a change of policy by Apple.

I understand why hawkmoth was asking, he just didn't want to see you make a possibly unnecessary expenditure.

Something worth highlighting at this point is that sharing of secondary vaults is not possible with iCloud so you would need to use one of the other solutions. The reason is it's impossible to share iCloud storage and definitely not with how CloudKit works. You can of course use iCloud to sync your own primary vaults with your own devices and then use Dropbox for just the secondary vault if you so wish.

Something worth considering for Windows might be the following. Say you created another secondary vault just for the passwords you'd need to access in Quicken. I know it sounds odd but bear with me. If you synced that with Dropbox too it would create say a quicken.agilekeychain. Well we have something called 1PasswordAnywhere which allows access to a particular vault in a read-only format. That could allow you access to a small set of passwords on your Windows machine without an entire copy of 1Password.

Of course, if you think you would make good use of 1Password for Windows then as hawkmoth said, we can assist you in getting the bundle price even if you need to purchase the 1Password (MAS) version.

If you have any questions relating from any of that or indeed simply other questions do please ask

I'm a simple person and using 1P is to protect my accounts and uncomplicated the password world. So I would prefer to buy through MAS sync with iCloud and ideally not even use it for windows. However i must be able to download financial data into quicken which resides in windows 7 on my MAC using boot camp.
I'm hoping someone in the windows forum (where a discussion on quicken has been moved) helps determine whether I need 1P for windows to accomplish this and how to go about it. If it is determined that 1P for windows is not necessary, I hope I can learn how to get the passwords in quicken without manually entering them every time on download.
    Thanks

Hopefully  I don't know Quicken so with a little luck somebody can give you a good answer there.
