in my application support folder I have 1password (13.1GB) and 1password4 (11.4Gb) with the vast majority of that space being taken up by backups. firstly do i need to keep the 1password or does it have components that run 1password4? secondly how do i reduce the size of the backup folder? Thanks

    Hi @bsna04,

The ~/Library/Application Support/1Password/ folder is purely relating to 1Password 3 so if you aren't using it any more then you can remove it. As 1Password 4/5 are so fundamentally different from 1Password 3 they use their own folder to hold all the very different files. As 1Password 5 doesn't do anything differently in relation to the files we left it using the 1Password 4 folder.

Now the size of the 1Password 4 folder is still pretty damned massive. The first thing to do is look at your vault or vaults and see how large it is. If your vault isn't pretty large from say lots of attachments then something seems to have ballooned and of course been reflected in the backups.

Can I ask, how large is the following folder on your system?

    ~/Library/Application Support/1Password 4/Data

and in your opinion do you feel that is excessively large for however many vaults and attachments you may have in 1Password?

With insight into how large the files storing your vault(s) are, do the backups seem excessive in size?

Now you can of course manually delete some of the backups but if you do (and I do understand wanting to free up some space) you have to remember that should you ever need them and you've deleted them...

One we have a bit more insight we can start looking at what to do if it still seems excessively large.

many thanks indeed that has addressed the problem and 30 backups would take alot of space.

One final question - if I delete a document that was in 1password - is it automatically gone or do i have to then empty the trash too?

    Hi @bsna04,

When you delete items in 1Password, they're moved to the Trash, which you can find at the very bottom of the left sidebar in the main 1Password app. Similar to the Finder on your Mac, items in the Trash remain there until you empty it. You can do that by choosing 1Password > Empty Trash from the menu bar. You can also Control-click on Trash in the sidebar and choose Empty Trash.

If you've deleted a lot of items (and especially if those items have attachments), there's a good chance that's what takes up so much space in your vault and backup files. Let us know how it goes and if you have more questions about that! :)
